Last year, I resolved to come back to Columbus to find some more places that serve the region’s particular mustard-based barbecue sauce. I got to speak for a couple of minutes with a fellow whose family first concocted the recipe and tried two joints. And I got some doughnuts. Good trip. Continue reading »

Photo Post 3: Columbus GA (part two)
Another post more about buildings and less about food shows off a crumbling and long-shuttered theater, and a foundry that has been in business for about 130 years, and more. Continue reading »
Photo Post 2: Columbus GA (part one)
A couple of hours in Georgia’s third-largest city were very well spent, since I was on the lookout for neat old buildings. In the first of two posts, here are some of the more memorable places that I found. Continue reading »
Country’s Barbecue and more, Columbus, GA
Cheryl had mentioned to us when Marie and I were in Columbus in September that she would be busy on the last weekend of October, and to try not to schedule a trip down that weekend. Indeed, we had originally planned to make our visit to Providence Canyon on the 22nd, but circumstances conspired against … Continue reading »
The Black Cow and The Cannon, Columbus GA
Uptown Columbus is apparently at something of a crossroads. Cook’s Place, Columbus GA
A couple of weeks ago, Marie and I took the baby to Columbus and Phenix City for a day of eating, walking and visiting friends. We visited five restaurants and I’ll write those up over this and the next two chapters. A sixth, Fountain City Coffee, was intended, but we completely exhausted the almost nap-free … Continue reading »
Ok Sun, Columbus GA
We returned to Columbus and stretched our legs for just a moment at Ric and Maggi’s place before driving over to the restaurant. It’s five exits away on I-185, which, in Columbus terms, is the other side of town. Continue reading »
Country’s Barbecue, Columbus GA
Our day trip to middle Georgia and Alabama brought us back to Columbus after some time spent shopping at Hastings. We spent better than an hour enjoying the city’s Riverwalk along the Chattahoochee before going to visit our friend Cheryl, who had recommended we stop at Mrs. Story’s earlier in the day. We had a … Continue reading »
Dinglewood Pharmacy, Columbus GA
Did I ever tell you about the time that I drove two hours for a chili dog? It was 2002 and I was living in Alpharetta and woke up one Saturday morning in the summer with no particular plans but an insatiable craving for a scrambled dog from Dinglewood Pharmacy, about two hours’ south of … Continue reading »
