Gimmee Jimmy’s Cookies

This is Marie, contributing an article about something that is very close to my heart – cookies. We had the opportunity to try out a box of two flavors of cookies from Gimmee Jimmy’s (, a company based in New Jersey: oatmeal raisin and chocolate rugelach.

I put aside the majority of the oatmeal raisin for myself because they are in my top 5 list of favorites and the others don’t like them nearly as much, but left a few for the others; Grant said that although he typically does not care for that variety, these were quite good. I declined to bring back any of the ones I’d brought to my desk at work, however. The teenager dismissed the rugelach as “weird” on initial offer, but then ate several while my back was turned.

The cookies were packed nicely in a tin, with wax paper separating the flavors and a bag around it all. There was only one broken cookie in our whole tin! Considering how tender the cookies were and how gorilla-like our mail delivery tends to be, that is remarkable.

One thing that is particularly neat about these cookies is that they are dairy-free. As someone with lactose intolerance, I tend to suffer for my love of cream- and butter-filled treats (yes, butter shouldn’t have lactose but often the American manufacturing process returns some for sweetness). As a result, it was quite pleasant to have that problem taken off the table. My son has even more difficulties with dairy than I do, and he really enjoyed being given a good bit more latitude than he usually enjoys with baked goods.

The back story on the cookies is also fairly interesting. Jimmy Libman, the founder and original Jimmy, was a deaf man who made such a good living out of his cookies that he was able to bring other deaf people into the business, which thrived for over two decades. The business went through a few changes since then, including a few ill-fated coffee shops, and is reorganizing now to focus on the original recipes through mail order.

  1. I think you and I are the only people in America who like oatmeal raisin cookies. They’re my favorite!

  2. There have to be more of us out there. People keep trying to sell them and they wouldn’t survive off of just us two…!
