There was one hitch in our trip to Athens, recounted over the last three chapters. I had hoped that we could go with our fellow blogger Sandy from Bella Vivere, who also attended UGA. It’s always really fun to spend time in Athens with somebody who went to school at a different time; you get to share similar and yet radically different stories. Sadly, she had to work, and suggested that we meet for dessert in Gwinnett County on our way home.
Mac Lab opened in 2015 in the same big strip mall on Pleasant Hill Road that’s home to Ming’s Bar-B-Q. It’s a very small and very cute little concept. They offer teas and macarons, and a few other dessert treats. They keep it simple and reasonably inexpensive. Well, given the chance, my daughter would happily enjoy a twelve-pack of macarons, but mercifully, common sense took hold. You don’t need quite that many.
The macarons here are completely delicious. We sampled several flavors, and I liked the Earl Grey best.
The green tea cheesecake pleasantly surprised Marie and Sandy. It had more of a lemon flavor, with green tea icing. The drink selection’s also really good. A Boylan Birch Beer and a couple of macarons make a fine, fine dessert. Pleasant Hill Road is usually a congested pain in the rear, but Mac Lab’s just a couple of traffic lights off the interstate, and a perfectly fine place to visit for an after-dinner meal, whether you’re already in the area, or are traveling back from either Greenville or Athens and would like a good place to pull over and relax.
You can see all the restaurants that we have visited for our blog on this map, with links back to the original blog posts. It’s a terrific resource for anybody planning a road trip through the southeast!
