A Lexington Sampling Tour (part two)

After a terrible night’s sleep in a pretty good hotel, I was ready for some more barbecue on the second day of my trip. I knew that my first stop was going to be a great one, but how would the second stop fare? Continue reading “A Lexington Sampling Tour (part two)”

A Lexington Sampling Tour (part one)

Marie wanted a few quiet days to sip tea with her mother, and I wanted to drive fast along curvy mountain roads. So we packed our masks and said our goodbyes and I decided that I could find something to eat as well. I’d been through Lexington NC three times before but never really stayed to linger. I wondered whether any of the town’s famous barbecue restaurants were open on Sunday… Continue reading “A Lexington Sampling Tour (part one)”

Righting Wrongs: Our June 2019 Barbecue Road Trip

When we were much more ravenous about collecting content, we often only had the opportunity to visit a distant restaurant one time and form an opinion on what might not have been a good day for the place. Earlier this month, we spent three days on the road eating barbecue, and one of my goals was to give a couple of restaurants another opportunity to amaze me in the same way that they’ve amazed so many other happy customers. I first visited Lexington Barbecue two years ago on a day when some program on the Travel Channel was shooting an episode of one of their many shows about driving around and eating well, and I’ve wondered ever since whether the food might not be even better when it’s prepared and served outside the madness and chaos of a taping day. What I enjoyed then was really good, don’t get me wrong, but if my experience has taught me anything, it’s that kitchens often don’t do their best work when outside forces like festivals or TV shows are slamming the restaurant. Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ, Winston-Salem NC

In the past, when I’ve taken these little trips, I’ve usually gone on a Friday and Saturday. This time, I did it on Thursday and Friday, because I took my daughter to see the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. She really liked the place, I’m glad to say. Her grades need a little more of a kick in the pants to make it into such a good school, but at least in the short term, she came back motivated and started reporting some higher test scores. She still has a little time to get that GPA looking better. Continue reading “Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ, Winston-Salem NC”
