B & J’s Steaks and Seafood, Darien GA

Ages and ages ago, we stopped by Skipper’s Fish Camp, a popular, upscale seafood place in the coastal Georgia town of Darien and enjoyed a very nice meal with some excellent, fresh shrimp. We noticed B & J’s at the time, and soon found a gigantic pile of recommendations and love for this decidedly downscale little joint with a partially unpaved lot. Mike from Sweet Tea & Bourbon stopped by B & J’s a little later that same spring and raved about it. Continue reading “B & J’s Steaks and Seafood, Darien GA”

Betty Bombers, Savannah GA

Last month, we went back down to south Georgia for a few days and, as we like to stop for a meal in Savannah, we left very early and made it to Betty Bombers on Bull Street for lunch. It’s a fabulous little room in the American Legion Hall, which is completely gorgeous. It was built in 1913 and served as the home of the Chatham Artillery for some decades. Yalla! and Fred’s Meat and Bread, Krog Street Market, Atlanta GA

Since opening several months ago, the Krog Street Market has caught the imagination of many writers in our hobby. While not at all identical, it’s a similar set-up to the long-established Sweet Auburn Curb Market, offering stall spaces, and, in a couple of cases, full table service opportunities to local chefs with neat ideas. One of Ford Fry’s concepts, Superica, has a packed patio, The Cockentrice has been getting rave reviews, Gu’s Dumplings is providing temporary relief for people who are still bereft that the Bistro on Buford Highway closed and hasn’t yet formally announced its relocation, and Craft Izakaya is also drawing in crowds and mobs. Slow Cooker Pulled Chicken Nachos

This is Marie, contributing a recipe that has a lot to do with not wanting to cook because it is too warm. I’m not honestly a nachos sort of person, but there are people in my house quite keen on them and I was willing to try them out. I am pretty sure I found this recipe by following links starting somewhere in an article about not wanting to use the stove during the summertime. It hadn’t occurred to me until then that a crock pot was actually not a wintertime-only tool.If it wasn’t from a link in that nowhere-to-be-found article, then it was from a mommy blogger (sorry I can’t credit you either) who linked to this… Continue reading “Slow Cooker Pulled Chicken Nachos”

Pouch, Athens GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about baked goods – one savory, one sweet.

I had taken my boy for a day out in Athens. We had fun picking strawberries together, and wearing out the boy in the always delightful “World of Wonder Playground” in Southeast Clarke Park, working up quite an appetite in the process. We then went downtown to get some lunch. Continue reading “Pouch, Athens GA”

Big Al’s Gourmet Butter Burgers, Atlanta GA

My friend David works a mile and a bit south of a burger place called Big Al’s, which opened at the beginning of the year, and told me that it’s so popular at his work that nobody’s having lunch anywhere else lately. One Friday in April, I figured that he’d sold me and met him at the space, which is on the ground floor of a parking-crunched two-story retail center on Peachtree, along with a Firehouse Subs and a CamiCakes.
