A few weeks ago, we got together with Emily and Adam from Spatialdrift and enjoyed a really good supper at Ameer’s Mediterranean Grill. It’s in the center of a small strip mall on Briarcliff near Lavista, right next to Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ. It’s been on my radar for a few months, as JustJan from Staycation Atlanta recommended it to us, so when Emily tossed it up as an idea, I grabbed it. Stationside, Atlanta GA
In May of last year (as mentioned in passing in this story), Marie and I went to see Katie Herzig at a terrific venue called Terminal West, and enjoyed a couple of bottles of Fentiman’s soda before and during the show. We did not really pay attention to where we obtained the drinks. It turns out that the space adjacent to Terminal West is a small restaurant called Stationside. It’s open for lunch, and also for dinner during shows. Continue reading “Stationside, Atlanta GA”
Fresh Pot Cafe, Hixson TN
I asked Marie to pick a place for our last stop on the trip, and she came up with a great one. It’s the oddly-named Fresh Pot Cafe, whose name reminds me that a straight-edge friend of mine was at a charity auction with me last month and was assigned bidder number 420. Har-de-har! Moon Pie General Store, Chattanooga TN
I heard the most remarkably unkind and unfair assessment of the Moon Pie General Store from one of its neighbors in downtown Chattanooga after we visited here. She growled about them and – no joke – admonished us for taking our three year-old boy there, saying something slanderous. “Well, there’s supporting local business,” I said, not intending to get into an across-the-street skirmish, and concluded that I didn’t need to visit her establishment again. The Moon Pie General Store, after all, made us, and dozens of other people, feel welcome and nobody there badmouthed their fellow merchants. Continue reading “Moon Pie General Store, Chattanooga TN”
Bama Boys BBQ, Henagar AL
Three of the four times that we’ve visited Scottsboro, we have next driven east across the beautiful BB Comer Bridge, and thought that it must surely be the final time because they keep threatening to dismantle it. Fortunately, the Alabama DOT is slow, even slower than their counterparts in Tennessee, and they haven’t got around to it yet. You can see a couple of photos from our last trip back in August, when we were hopeful that the locals could preserve the bridge for pedestrians. I keep an eye on their progress, because I love the beautiful old thing, and encourage all our readers who are interested in preservation and history to check out the Friends of the Comer Bridge on Facebook. Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain, Scottsboro AL
We absolutely love old businesses, and enjoy celebrating restaurants that opened a really long time ago. For a while, we thought that Tony’s in Gastonia NC might be the oldest restaurant that we’d find – it’s a century young this year – but to our huge and pleasant surprise we had a snack at a place that is approaching one hundred and fifty freaking years of continuous operation. It’s called Payne’s and it originally opened in 1869. Continue reading “Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain, Scottsboro AL”
Sugar’s Ribs, Chattanooga TN (take two)
For many years, Marie and I have enjoyed embarrassing our daughter with song and dance. We arrived at Sugar’s Ribs about ten minutes before they opened a couple of Saturdays back and might have just surpassed ourselves. Continue reading “Sugar’s Ribs, Chattanooga TN (take two)”
