360 Burger, Nashville TN (CLOSED)

Before we left town, we caught up with friends and enjoyed a very good dinner with them at a nice place for burgers and live music in the Antioch neighborhood. And as a bonus, there’s a tea shop just two doors down. Continue reading “360 Burger, Nashville TN (CLOSED)”

Tea and Chocolate in Athens GA

This is Marie, contributing an article that is, as is my habit, mainly about desserts. As my age increases and my waistline decides that it’s worked hard and long enough and mid-40’s is a good time to give in, these treats have to be slightly less frequent and a good deal less voluminous. Therefore it’s really important that they be superb, don’t you see! I can’t eat an entire bag of Hershey’s Kisses without serious consequences, nor do I actually particularly want to any more. Mean Mug Coffeehouse and The Hot Chocolatier, Chattanooga TN

Some days, you just can’t get away from people! We had the most amusing run of luck on our Saturday in Chattanooga. After lunch, we’d gone by McKay to spend some time shopping for books and music. Across the store, I spotted my old friend Darius, whom I’d not seen in ages. Turned out he had tagged along with our friends Matt and Kelley, whom we had seen a little more recently than we’d seen Darius, to sell some of their books and CDs and things to buy more. So we caught up with our buddies for a few minutes and made our way onto our snack at Dub’s Place. Continue reading “Mean Mug Coffeehouse and The Hot Chocolatier, Chattanooga TN”

Iron Works Coffee Company, Athens GA

We received a suggestion to check out Iron Works Coffee, which opened in early November. It’s a little cafe in the lobby of the new Graduate Hotel, and while we don’t actually care for coffee, Marie loves tea and I don’t mind hot chocolate, so we stopped by for a light breakfast before going to visit one of Marie’s friends and drop off some clothes for her new grandson. Mama Mocha’s Coffee Emporium, Auburn AL

This is Marie, contributing an article about a paired establishment that has divided into two – the Gnu’s Room and Mama Mocha’s. We’d stumbled over the bookstore while wandering in another part of town, and on arriving at the coffeehouse found out more about the story. Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party, Atlanta GA

Marie loves to start her day with a cup of tea, and loves all the wonderful flavors that she samples from places like Stash, or David’s, or Teavana. So I’ve had a pretty good feeling for years that she would enjoy a trip to the wonderfully-named Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party in Candler Park, which opened in 2007. I wish that I could tell you that it’s located between a men’s clothing store called Uncle Arthur’s and a hippie shop called Serena’s, but that’s because I probably enjoyed the classic sitcom Bewitched more than anybody else. Bookmarks Coffee Shop, Florence AL

This is Marie, talking about a cute little restaurant in Florence, Alabama called Bookmarks that we visited as a part of Florence Restaurant Week. It’s located in the same building as the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, and more libraries need to do this. My goodness, how are you going to compete with a bookstore if you don’t have caffeine attached physically to the building, people? Make it hip! Plus, 100% of the proceeds from the shop go directly to fund library books, materials and programs. Continue reading “Bookmarks Coffee Shop, Florence AL”
