Years ago, in some of the earliest chapters at this blog that mentioned barbecue around Athens, I lamented the closure of Carither’s, a very good restaurant that had been in an old red brick building on Milledge, near the old Bi-Lo and the bypass. I found it probably in 1995 and ate there off and on for the next decade. I was not the only one. The legendary ABC sportscaster Keith Jackson once called it the best he’d ever had. Em’s Kitchen, Athens GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about breakfast in Athens. I’d first run across a mention of Em’s Kitchen on one of my favorite mommy blogs, the wonderfully eclectic My So-Called Mommy Life, from a post way back in the spring. Sadly, we go to Athens far less often than I’d like, and we didn’t get around to trying the place out until now. It is a breakfast and lunch place which does brunch on the weekends. Redd’s Que & Stew, Jefferson GA
Two of our old friends announced they were getting hitched, and that they’d be having a wedding hootenanny at a farmhouse near Jefferson. I said that was perfect, because there were two barbecue joints in Jefferson and one near Commerce, about a mile and a half west of the interstate, that I wanted to try. Cali-N-Tito’s, Athens GA
There’s a terrific building in Athens, south of the campus and adjacent to one of the athletic tracks on Lumpkin. For many years, it was the home of Cruiser’s, which served up some of the city’s best burgers. Later, it was Achim’s K-Bob’s, the ancestor of Keba Spitfire Grill. Around 2006, Cali-N-Tito’s, a Central American restaurant that had, if I remember correctly, been serving up Cuban sandwiches, tamales, and burritos from a little trailer on Tallassee, moved in and turned the old concrete patio into a pebbled beach with palm trees and playground equipment for kids. Inside, the lights are low and the line is long. Continue reading “Cali-N-Tito’s, Athens GA”
Pulaski Heights BBQ, Athens GA
I had bigger plans for this trip to Athens than would see the light of day. I was going to spend all darn afternoon in town, and take a really nice springtime walk at the Botanical Gardens, and visit four places for the blog, and have a couple of beers at Trappeze. Then I had that first meal, recounted in the previous chapter, and, my stomach laden with more grease than I can remember having anywhere, ever, I began scaling back plans massively. There wasn’t going to be any beer, for starters. The thought of drinking anything other than water made my stomach hurt more. I made the decision to be a little more explicit about the effect it had on my system in this separate chapter, because it wasn’t that first restaurant’s fault that I put more food in my gut sixty minutes later. Cabin Creek BBQ, Nicholson GA
My father, when he was still with us, was never a big fan of driving from Smyrna to Athens, but when he did come to see me when I lived there, he’d take the long way. This was when 316 only went as far as Dacula, and he hated the sprawl on the old Atlanta Highway. Everything between the mall and the dorms rubbed him the wrong way. So he sat down with a map after coming to see me once, and went home along Prince Avenue, taking GA-15 through Jefferson to the interstate. That way is ten miles longer, but it was worth it to him. Big Oak Bar-B-Q, Commerce GA
Here’s a curious turn of events. Earlier this month, I intended to stop by some barbecue place, forgot what it was, and settled for something else instead. In the end, it really didn’t matter – if it’s a place that we’ve never been, then I want to visit, simple as that – but there’s the downside of being scatterbrained and having too many facts to store in your skull. The place that I had originally wanted to stop was Cabin Creek in Nicholson, but that’ll have to wait until the next time. This visit saw us stopping by Big Oak, just outside of Commerce.
