This is Marie, making a contribution about a rather delightful annual event at my mother’s church, the International Food Tasters Festival. It’s been going on for 21 years as a fund raiser. The event started out rather small but has been getting bigger, and by this year there had to have been at least a hundred people in the room just while we were eating, including several of my mother’s friends who were looking forward to meeting me and my family. A few restaurants even participate in providing offerings. If I remember correctly, my mother made a few contributions towards the early, small events, but she has just been going to eat since then. Bubba Garcia’s Mexican Cantina and Zuzu’s, Saint Simons Island GA
I was just saying last month that the presence of Jack Davis artwork is a sure sign of a restaurant’s quality, and here, for the third time this year, is a place with his wonderful and distinctive art emblazoned for all the world to see. Never mind the Zagat sticker in the window, does a place get a thumbs up from one of Mad Magazine’s Usual Gang of Idiots, that’s what I’d like to know. Bubba Garcia’s, a small cantina owned by the same group on Saint Simons Island behind the popular Gnat’s Landing, goes one better than even the good places this year with caricatures of the owners – Old Brick Pit and Mayflower Restaurant – by having the business’s mascot be a signed Jack Davis creation. Skippers Fish Camp, Darien GA
We spent Christmas down on Saint Simons Island with Marie’s mother and her father, took a side trip down to Jacksonville on the Sunday, and made our way back home on Monday. On the return trip, we stopped by two more of the thirty-one Georgia restaurants that have featured reviews on Roadfood.com. First up was Skippers Fish Camp, in the small town of Darien, about fifteen miles north of Brunswick. We took US 17 north to get here. It was a bright, shiny and downright gorgeous day to spend wondering what the heck this excellent, upscale restaurant was doing featured along with all the barbecue shacks and classic old diners on that website. Mallery Street Cafe, Saint Simons Island GA
This is Marie, contributing another small chapter about a place on St. Simons Island called Mallery Street Cafe. It’s brand new and has no history whatsoever; I don’t even recall having seen it the last time we came down to visit. It’s in the same location as a former CD and tape shop where as a teenager I used to spend what little of my allowance used to be left after the purchase of books and candy; in one of the shops that came in succession after that one, my sister bought altogether too much incense and smelly candles. St Simons Sweets, Saint Simons Island GA
(Marie writes again… having taken a quick weekend jaunt back down to the coast, she took the camera to snap a couple of pictures of a new favorite on Mallery Street.)
St. Simons Sweets is the latest store to make an attempt at the sweet-toothed segment of the tourist crowd in the Pier area of what St. Simons residents call “The Village.” I am not sure why so many have come and gone, as a candy-and-ice cream shop seems a sure bet in any tourist area, but this is by far the best organized and busiest of them.
