Julia Child’s Favorite Angel Hair Pomodoro

This is Marie, contributing an article about a recipe we got from Steve DiFillippo’s new memoir, It’s All About the Guest. Steve is the founder of Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, a restaurant chain that we really enjoy. Grant has already posted a review of the book this week at The Hipster Dad’s Bookshelf, and today we’re featuring a recipe from it. Synergy! Em’s Kitchen, Athens GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about breakfast in Athens. I’d first run across a mention of Em’s Kitchen on one of my favorite mommy blogs, the wonderfully eclectic My So-Called Mommy Life, from a post way back in the spring. Sadly, we go to Athens far less often than I’d like, and we didn’t get around to trying the place out until now. It is a breakfast and lunch place which does brunch on the weekends. Frannie’s Gluten-Free Muffins

Normally, when I write a post, I start it out by saying “This is Marie,” so you’ll know that it is me and not Grant, but that seems strange when we have a picture on the side of somebody else. I’m contributing a tiny little post about a tiny little muffin. Look at them right here, being held up by their baker, Frannie. Aren’t they cute? Actually, I’m going to take a moment to talk about food allergies; if all you want to know is what I thought about the muffins, that’s in the last three paragraphs.

For a considerable portion of our baby’s infancy, he had eczema. Not the worst case ever (that would be his sister) but plenty of his baby pictures show him with big red scratched-up streaks all over, especially on his face. Poor little man. Anyway, I was convinced he had allergies to all sorts of things, because he’d flare up when I ate certain things, dairy and tomatoes especially. So I struggled with that for a while and finally put him on formula. The change didn’t help much because he was actually NOT ALLERGIC to any of my favorite suspects, although I remain convinced that the worst flare-ups were way too consistently and closely associated with certain foods to be totally coincidental. Anyway, this is a long way to get around to explaining why I read a lot of articles at Scary Mommy like this one and this one and getting even less sleep than I might have otherwise either worrying about things I couldn’t control, or obsessively trying to find recipes which excluded whatever allergen I suspected that week. That Pie Place, Dunwoody GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing an article about pies. There is hardly any food substance short of chocolate that is dearer to my heart than pies, and unfortunately that means that many a time I have had my heart broken. You know that exciting feeling you used to get as a kid when you emptied out your Halloween bag onto the bed and saw that someone had given you a couple of full-sized chocolate bars? Or the disappointment when you saw that nearly all the chocolate was that generic chalky stuff that comes in foil wrappers with badly-drawn cartoon ghosts and no brand name on them? Well, that experience is very like how I feel about pies, which is why, unless I can actually see the pie in a display case, I hardly ever order a slice. Because all too often, you get a plate of disappointment that reminds you of the chalk-olate Halloween candy. Continue reading “That Pie Place, Dunwoody GA (CLOSED)”

Cooking with Red Gold, part two – Red Gold Burger

This is Marie, contributing an article about a recipe we tried out from the Red Gold folks who were kind enough to send us some of their products to sample. They sent some of their cans of tomatoes along with a variety of ideas for what to do with them. Continue reading “Cooking with Red Gold, part two – Red Gold Burger”

Cooking with Red Gold, part one – Spicy Burger

This is Marie, contributing an article about the Red Gold Tomato summer promotion, specifically their burger ideas. I have to admit that it wouldn’t have occurred to me to put a can of tomatoes into burger mix, so it was interesting to try out their suggestions. We had the opportunity to try five of their tomato varieties, along with recipes for five different ways to use them in burgers for the grill, and with some spicy ketchup to slather over whichever of them we tried. Look at this stack of interesting varieties. You might be able to get some yourself. Continue reading “Cooking with Red Gold, part one – Spicy Burger”
