I issued a standing demand to Emily, our friend from Spatialdrift, as she and Adam continued their inexorable march north up Buford Highway eating at every single non-chain restaurant. When she got to Gu’s Bistro, I wanted to be there. Any excuse for a trip to Gu’s will bring at least one of us from our distant suburb to this one. Mind you, that Shan City Chicken at Man Chun Hong – see last week’s story – is drop-your-mouth amazing, but Gu’s is probably my overall favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. Star Provisions, Atlanta GA
Sometimes, word of mouth is still much stronger than social media. For example, one of my co-workers also has a part time job at Jeni’s Ice Creams. We all love this particular co-worker, well, for lots of reasons, but one of them is that every so often, she’ll bring in a few pints and leave them in the freezer with a note on a break room table inviting us to indulge. Oh, that Banana French Toast. My, my. Continue reading “Star Provisions, Atlanta GA”
Lovie’s BBQ, Atlanta GA
Lovie’s BBQ has been open for about six months now, in an absolute headache of a space. It’s not their fault; just about every intersection in the city, even all the other ones in Buckhead, is better managed than the nightmare of Piedmont and Lenox. I cringe just thinking about what their Friday evening diners must endure, because it was bad enough at 2 pm when I visited one day in April. If you are coming from Lenox via GA-400, get in the center lane and go straight through the light at Piedmont. Turn left into the parking lot behind Chipotle. That’s the easiest way, and you’ll want to arrive in a good mood to enjoy what they’re doing here. Continue reading “Lovie’s BBQ, Atlanta GA”
Man Chun Hong, Doraville GA
Over the last four years, all my old stereotypes of Chinese food have been dismantled and demolished, and I have started to enjoy the pleasure of finding more authentic cooking. At this stage, there are only a couple of places in the Atlanta area that we’ve visited a second or third time as we look for more places with exciting menus to add to our small knowledge base. I think we can safely add Doraville’s Man Chun Hong to that short list. This is definitely a place we want to visit again repeatedly. Continue reading “Man Chun Hong, Doraville GA”
Chicken and Chorizo Stew
This is Marie, talking about a recipe that Grant found for “Chicken and Chorizo stew.” I liked the story behind it, that a woman with a child was trying to make something out of what remained in her kitchen after a week; as she mentioned, sometimes shopping with a kid is a breeze, and sometimes you have to escape before he has a complete meltdown over whether he can have one of the $6 toy cars that break in less than a week. Continue reading “Chicken and Chorizo Stew”
Mama’s Pizza, Alpharetta GA
Our old friend Matt has taken a job in Alpharetta, giving us a chance to meet up with him and sample another north Fulton restaurant. He suggested Mama’s Pizza, which has been selling New York-style slices since 1979. Peter Vavaroutsos emigrated from Greece to New York City in the mid-1950s, learned to make pizza the local way, and moved to the Big Peach after twenty years in the Big Apple. His son Jimmy now carries on the family tradition. Continue reading “Mama’s Pizza, Alpharetta GA”
Verde Taqueria, Atlanta GA
And then there was the evening that Marie decided to test that old theory about a shot of tequila being good for a headache. Continue reading “Verde Taqueria, Atlanta GA”
