Baldinos Giant Jersey Subs, Doraville GA

I’ve known for ages that there’s a second Baldinos in the Atlanta area, but I think I’ve got a pretty good reason for never stopping in before now. It’s my favorite place to get a big sandwich, and I eat at the one about five miles south of our house fairly often, as these things go, and didn’t really think it worth the mileage to ever drive all the way over to Buford Highway for something that we can get at home. Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing an article about Everyday Organic, a restaurant in Greenville that is, sadly, much too far away. I really enjoyed my meal there and would have very much liked to try more of their offerings. Continue reading “Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)”

Sugar -n- Spice Drive-In, Spartanburg SC

Around the beginning of every year, Marie and I take a day trip to the Palmetto State. This was our fourth year doing this, and we decided to stick around the I-85 corridor this time around, and enjoy some good eating before and after a visit to Greenville’s Children’s Museum of the Upstate, about which a little more on Friday. The Sheik, Jacksonville FL

In the 1960s, as fast food really began to take off, every business owner was looking for an angle. In Jacksonville, a fellow named Tarzan Akel came up with a winking little way to get attention. Several of the area’s delis had been building sandwiches in pita bread for a few years, looking to win the attention of the city’s large Arabic population, and he decided to go full-bore into middle eastern imagery. In 1965, he opened the first of what would be a six-store chain called The Sheik, specializing in a pita sandwich filled with ham, salami, bologna, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion, along with a special sauce. It’s called a camel rider. Continue reading “The Sheik, Jacksonville FL”

Zunzi’s, Savannah GA

Last month, we enjoyed a six-day trip in south Georgia for Christmas, and we’ll be covering our new experiences over the next week and a half. I wanted to make sure that we got a new story from Savannah this time out. I figure any opportunity to stop into this great city is one worth taking, and I’m glad that we’ve resolved to come here a little more frequently on our travels. Last year, one of our readers recommended that we visit this teeny little carry-out room on York Street and try their amazing hummus. I’m not quite sure that Marie is one hundred percent satisfied that we did. I think she liked the food okay, but she got humbled in a no-holds barred battle of puns with one of the employees here. It really was a sight to see. Continue reading “Zunzi’s, Savannah GA”

Victory Sandwich Bar, Decatur GA

I sure am glad that we got together with Bella Vivere and with Spatialdrift for lunch one Saturday last month. Not just because we all enjoy each other’s company and I think we get good blogging ideas from each other, and not because the place that was suggested, Victory Sandwich Bar, turned out to be really tasty and a great little lunch, but because, at last, I know the best place to park in Decatur. Emily told me about a secret weekend parking spot that is so darn wonderful that, should she ever want to head up to Athens for a Saturday, I’m going to let her and Adam in on my secret parking spot up there as well. The General Muir, Atlanta GA

I said the other day that neither celebrity chefs nor advance-opening hype really interest us as much as either longevity or reports of great food from people we trust. The “pre-release” hype is just the worst. I don’t know whether anything kills my desire to visit a restaurant as much as constant “advance looks” at its interior. Let me guess: it’s going to look more like a restaurant than a greenhouse, and might possibly serve cocktails in mason jars. Continue reading “The General Muir, Atlanta GA”
