Farewell Atlanta 3: Zesto

I was sketching out our “Farewell Atlanta” week at the blog and wanted to visit four Atlanta restaurants that I enjoy that don’t get very much hobbyist press at all, the sort of fun, ultra-regional places that really only Atlantans know about. I wanted to write about the sort of places that, if Marie and I had been based in some other city all this time, we’d come to Atlanta on our road trips to sample alongside its barbecue. Now, if Martin’s was an obvious choice, then Zesto had to be included as well. Ages ago, I mentioned that Zesto and Martin’s were roughly similar to Birmingham’s Milo’s and Jack’s. Farewell Atlanta 2: Martin’s

A couple of months ago, Drew from Man Up Texas BBQ tweeted that he’d driven 45 minutes for breakfast at Milo’s, a Birmingham-area fast food chain, and asked to be told if there was a better chicken biscuit anywhere. McKinnon’s Louisiane, Atlanta GA

As we continued turning down PR invitations for hot new launches and thumbing our noses at Atlanta’s coolest and hippest and newest places in favor of looking into the past at much older restaurants, our travels took us to McKinnon’s Louisiane, which opened in the mid-1970s, when Buckhead was not quite as rich and trendy as it is today. The restaurant, a dry cleaner, and a music store occupy a distinctly downmarket little strip mall that’s visible from Peachtree. Chapter 1400: The Red Snapper, Atlanta GA

Back in April, the venerable Italian restaurant, Alfredo’s, closed after 42 years in business. News of that got me thinking about some of Atlanta’s other 1970s veterans, and the Red Snapper came to mind. The present owners took over in 1986, and date the beginning of the restaurant then, but it certainly has a similar vibe to many of the city’s “timelost” restaurants, and some of our friends remember it being around well before ’86, but we have not been able to nail down a date yet. I confess that doing this as long as I have, some names and dates and towns get all confused and I miss some places and misidentify others. Once upon a time, I misheard some information and was not aware this restaurant was still in business.
