Southern Burger Co., Ooltewah TN

This week, I’ve been sharing stories about meals at new places around Chattanooga that we enjoyed while finding one reason or another to celebrate. We know that we don’t need all that many excuses, but we drove a few miles north of our neighborhood, to the town of Ooltewah, to toast Marie’s first successful week at her new job. I picked Southern Burger Co. after reading Chattavore’s story about the restaurant a few days previously. And since I knew I was going to dig into a big messy burger for dinner, I enjoyed a light vegetarian lunch earlier. Continue reading “Southern Burger Co., Ooltewah TN”

Flatiron Deli, Chattanooga TN

In the previous chapter, I mentioned that we celebrated finding a new place in Tennessee with a celebratory dinner. The following week, we went to sign the papers and pay the deposit, and celebrated with a terrific lunch. We found the Flatiron Deli in Yelp and certainly could have walked there from where we’d parked, had we been a little more familiar with the downtown area. Instead, we burned some gas that we needn’t have. Continue reading “Flatiron Deli, Chattanooga TN”

Tupelo Honey Cafe, Chattanooga TN

One day in late May, Marie and I drove up to Chattanooga with our son to look at what we hoped would be the house that we’d rent in the city. It’s smaller than the one we left behind, but the kitchen is larger and it has a screened patio and we found room for our shelves. The search was over and we were ready to celebrate. The Terminal Brewhouse, Chattanooga TN (take two)

In April, Marie and I took a day trip to Chattanooga for her to look into a possible job and for me to look at a neighborhood where we might end up residing. You know what’s within walking distance of this neighborhood? The excellent Terminal Brewhouse, home of some of the best house-made root beer available anywhere, along with a fantastic oatmeal stout called Southsidenstein. Las Morelianas, Hixson TN

One day in March, I decided to treat myself to a very long lunch. I was quite restless, tired of looking at the same walls, and wanted to take advantage of the cheap gasoline for a long drive. I woke very early and put in five hours on the clock, and, at 9 am, took my lunch break. I put a box of books and DVDs in the car and sold them to McKay, 90 miles up the road, and got a couple of really nice and inexpensive treasures and still came out way ahead. Then I drove up TN-153 to the town of Hixson, because Mary from Chattavore had written about a really promising Mexican restaurant and grocery store. It’s called Las Morelianas and it was worth the drive from McKay. Continue reading “Las Morelianas, Hixson TN”

Good Dog, Chattanooga TN (take two)

Before we left Chattanooga and picked up our daughter, I wanted to stop by one of the restaurants that we’ve featured before at our blog and see how it was doing. We picked Good Dog, which we first visited in 2011 and Marie got to try a couple of years later because our son absolutely loves hot dogs and it was time to give him the treat of something special here. Continue reading “Good Dog, Chattanooga TN (take two)”

Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant, Chattanooga TN

For our next stop in Chattanooga, I wanted to get some barbecue for a snack. Unfortunately, we were in town on a Sunday, and so our options were pretty limited. Every one of the new-to-us barbecue places in town that I know about are closed on Sunday, but then I noticed that Puckett’s Grocery has opened a new store, its fourth, downtown, just a block away from the Tennessee Aquarium. The restaurant opened in August and it follows the Puckett’s formula of live music, lots of branded merchandise, football on several TVs, and pretty good barbecue. To be clear, this is a slightly upscale chain, and while the original store is said to still have some of its downhome charm, this is a pretty corporate kind of place. We visited the Puckett’s in downtown Nashville three years ago, so we had a good idea what to expect. Continue reading “Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant, Chattanooga TN”
