In April, Marie and I took a day trip to Chattanooga for her to look into a possible job and for me to look at a neighborhood where we might end up residing. You know what’s within walking distance of this neighborhood? The excellent Terminal Brewhouse, home of some of the best house-made root beer available anywhere, along with a fantastic oatmeal stout called Southsidenstein. McNamara’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, Nashville TN
I love it when a newspaper puts together a nice and entertaining backstory about a restaurant. A few months ago, Brad Schmitt at The Tennessean did a nice little writeup about Sean and Paula McNamara, and the story of how the two met, he a singer who was performing about 300 shows a year around town, and she a visitor from Northern Ireland who came by Mulligan’s, where Sean fronted the house band, and happened to hear him sing. They married three years after that and opened their pub, McNamara’s, a little more than a decade later. Sean still sings with his group Nosey Flynn four nights a week in the main room of the large restaurant. If this were not a weekday evening and our hosts had to get up at disagreeable hours and go to their jobs Friday morning, I’d have liked to have stayed and heard them play. The Porter Beer Bar, Atlanta GA
One Friday last month, Marie and I had a date night and went to visit The Porter Beer Bar, a deceptively cavernous restaurant in Little Five Points. Even reading beforehand that the narrow space is incredibly long and opens up in the back, we were still pleasantly amused by just how far back this space goes! There is room inside for almost a hundred guests at a time, even if some of them might have to go up some stairs and down some more to make it to their table. The Pub Perimeter, Dunwoody GA
Last month, Marie and I were invited to a soft opening event for Perimeter Mall’s newest restaurant. Well, it was newest for a short time; we understand that a new Varasano’s Pizzeria is coming to the mall in a couple of weeks. Anyway, The Pub is a small chain based in Cincinnati (this is their twelfth store, and first Georgia location) that has the design of a traditional English pub, with appropriate posters and prints on the walls to give you the full British immersion experience. Henry VIII and the London Underground. The Beatles and The Who. Muse and Radiohead. Bangers and mash. Servers in kilts. It’s Six Flags Over London, guv’nah. 5 Seasons Brewing, Sandy Springs GA
Last month, the good people at Urbanspoon reached out to Atlanta’s awesome blogging community to hang out and talk shop for a while. 5 Seasons, a brewpub that opened in 2001 and has expanded to three locations in the region, hosted us and gave us the chance to sample some of their appetizers and a few of their beers. We had a terrific evening and enjoyed catching up with friends and meeting a few new people. Edgewood Corner Tavern, Atlanta GA
There are many places that I’ve read about and said “Hmmm, I’d like to go there,” and many others that I’ve read about and said “I’d like to go there along with Marie.” That’s the case with Edgewood Corner Tavern in the Old Fourth Ward. It’s one of four Corner Taverns in the city, the most popular of which is probably the one in Little Five Points. Each of them has their own specialties, along with a dense menu of reliable bar food and a very satisfactory and deep list of beers, but the Edgewood location was spotlighted last year in this report at A Hamburger Today.
