We are always looking out for restaurants to try in Brunswick, since we think that we have covered Saint Simons Island pretty well. I have my eye on a couple of places on the mainland, but when a review of Jerk Shack bubbled up at just the right time, I decided to give that place a try ahead of the competition. Marie really enjoys Jamaican cuisine and has hinted that we never quite get enough of it for her liking. So on our second day on the coast, we took a little drive back across the causeway. First we let the girlchild do some shopping in some vintage clothing stores, while Marie let the toddler enjoy some reading and relaxation in the public library. I looked through old city directories, chasing a lead that went nowhere, and then we drove north to Altama Avenue to find this ramshackle little business. Continue reading “Jerk Shack, Brunswick GA”

Mustard Chicken
This is Marie, contributing an article about a recipe I tried for Mustard Chicken. Here’s the original recipe that Grant found for me. This one didn’t turn out perfect, but it was intriguing enough to require a return for more experimentation. I want to tweak this a bit and make it work better. Continue reading “Mustard Chicken”
Apricot chicken
This is Marie, contributing an article about a recipe I tried for Apricot Chicken. Grant found this recipe at Yoghurt & Muesli. I had a little difficulty finding apricots in juice rather than in syrup. You might want to check first whether you can find any before planning to use this recipe, or just wait until the season comes back so you don’t have to take out a second mortgage to use fresh ones. Continue reading “Apricot chicken”
Sobban, Decatur GA (CLOSED)
I’ll cut straight to the point: Jiyeon Lee and Cody Taylor have opened another restaurant called Sobban, and, like their first, the mighty Heirloom Market Bar-B-Que, they are serving very good food that has a huge crowd of curious and impatient diners in far too small a space. I was mostly very pleased with our experience, but then again, I seem to tolerate the October cold better than some do. Continue reading “Sobban, Decatur GA (CLOSED)”
Chicken and Pepper Carbonara
This is Marie, sharing a recipe that I concocted because I couldn’t do what had been planned for the evening. Faced with the challenge of nevertheless making something that we hadn’t had before without being able to use the planned recipe for which the ingredients had been purchased, I poked around in my books and found something that, while all the ingredients for it were not actually present, I could still substitute and hope for the best. I chose baked spaghetti carbonara, and changed half of the ingredients. Continue reading “Chicken and Pepper Carbonara”
Sesame “Bad Luck” Chicken
This is Marie, contributing an article about a meal I made that was surrounded by so much drama that the food had to be pretty memorable to be recalled at all! Continue reading “Sesame “Bad Luck” Chicken”
Bell’s Hamburgers, Toccoa GA
One Friday last summer, I drove through Toccoa on a food-packed road trip through northeast Georgia to Clemson and back, and spotted a terrific old sign for a place called Bell’s. I photographed the sign for posterity and readers let me know, through comments and e-mails, what a mistake I made in not stopping for their fried chicken. Then I uncovered the existence of those two Maryland Fried stores in town and knew that I had to get back one day. As it turned out, we got to compare the two.
