Back in the first couple of years of this blog, we entertained a goal that sounded really fun. We wanted to visit every SEC city and have at least one meal. Then the conference expanded to incorporate two very distant cities, probably just to spite us, with only three to go. Well, never mind. I wasn’t in any hurry to visit Gainesville anyway. Then my mother moved to Apopka, meaning we could probably justify swinging through Gainesville on the way to visit her. I suppose, if we must. Continue reading “Satchel’s Pizza, Gainesville FL”

Screamin’ Mimi’s, Savannah GA
The day after Christmas, we left town for a trip to the Georgia coast, and stopped in Savannah for some pizza. There are two quite well-known places in town to get really good pizza. Vinnie Van Go-Go’s is very popular and has been written about many times, so I decided we’d go for the (slight) underdog. Screamin’ Mimi’s is a New Jersey-styled joint that was opened by Lou and Scarlett Cobello, late of Atlantic City, in 2007. They specialize in gigantic slices. One slice per guest is probably all that you need. A second is just asking for a food coma. Continue reading “Screamin’ Mimi’s, Savannah GA”
One Pizza to Please Them All
This is Marie, contributing a story about homemade pizza. I’ve always been a touch picky about toppings and the like, and had thought for quite some time in my optimistic (and somewhat incompetent) twenties that homemade pizza would be the answer – except for the fact that all my attempts had been really disappointing and not at all worth the time. After all, once you factor in the cost of all the ingredients, it really isn’t that much cheaper to do the pizza yourself! Continue reading “One Pizza to Please Them All”
Aurelio’s Pizza, Marietta GA
I made a factual error in the summer when I wrote about Nancy’s Pizza, a large Illinois-based chain with two stores in Atlanta. I wrote then that these were “the only places for more than a hundred miles where anybody can get a stuffed Chicago pie,” and that’s not true. Another mid-sized Illinois chain, Aurelio’s, has a single outpost in Cobb County. Continue reading “Aurelio’s Pizza, Marietta GA”
Ribalta, Atlanta GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about a visit to Ribalta, which invited me and some of our blogging friends, Atlanta Restaurant Blog and Iron Stef, to visit their new store in midtown. They just opened in Atlanta, expanding from their original New York location, with a process for pizza dough that they say results in a lighter, lower gluten crust. Chef Pasquale Cozzolino regenerates his dough every day from a yeast starter that has been used for the past 80 years. It’s a symptom of the times that when I heard the starter had been brought over from Italy, the first thought I had was “Yeah, right, they’d never let THAT through Customs!” But Customs wasn’t quite so strict in the past. Peace, Love and Pizza, Marietta GA
Up here in Atlanta’s northwestern suburbs, the psychedelic slices of Peace, Love and Pizza are totally taking over everything, man, which is an amazingly fab and gear thing. Since we last wrote about them on the occasion of visiting their second store in Woodstock, they have opened three new locations in eight months. That is pretty darned impressive. Continue reading “Peace, Love and Pizza, Marietta GA”
Baraonda, Atlanta GA
Marie and I had been looking forward to getting together with Andy and Jo from Burgers, Barbecue and Everything Else again for a few weeks, and weren’t sure where we’d like to go. Fortunately, Andy had a really interesting shortlist of good ideas and Baraonda, which has been packing in the pre-theater crowds just a block away from the Fabulous Fox, stood out.
