Poffertjes

This is Marie, contributing an article about a treat that is available at the Buford Farmer’s Market.

Our friends Helen and Vincent had told me that there were poffertjes there and that they would be glad to give a tour of one of their favorite stores, so of course we had to go. I’d not paid very much attention to the place before, under the mistaken impression that it was an ordinary booths-in-a-lot weekend affair. Wholly incorrect, of course. Jeanne’s House, Doraville GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing a visit to a Chinese place with a singularly unusual name.

Sometime a while ago, Grant started calling generic Mexican places “El-this-Los-that” and generic Chinese places “Happy-this-Golden-that” because honestly, how many Mexican or Chinese places in the suburbs have you gone to that DON”T use that pattern for their names? And if you go to the Golden China in the mall, isn’t that pretty much a guarantee of a choice between incandescent red glop versus opalescent whitish glop, over chicken or beef? Villains Wicked Heroes, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)

One of my other blogs is a tribute to the British comic 2000 AD, and I recently finished writing a story there about what we might term believable villainy. Meanwhile, at the intersection of Peachtree and 8th Street in Midtown, a new restaurant called Villains opened last month. It draws its design elements from unbelievable villainy, celebrating comic book arch-enemies and box office bad guys. If you’re looking for a place to meet up with another member of the Legion of Doom and discuss your nefarious schemes for global domination, then this might be the place for you. Taqueria el Milagro, Chamblee GA

Our friend Edgar organized another meetup at a really good place in Dekalb County, this one a joint we’d never heard of before. Taqueria el Milagro is right off the interstate on Shallowford, in a beat-up strip mall without too much parking, and they are serving up some really terrific Mexican food, mostly from authentic recipes. Tai Pei Restaurant, Duluth GA (CLOSED)

The southern portions of Buford Highway have been covered very well lately by lots of bloggers, and so since we were coming south down I-85 from Gainesville, I thought we would try our luck and stop by a place in the northern suburbs. Marie, who had only sampled a couple of tastes at Rick’s Smokin’ Pig, said that she was in the mood for Chinese, and so we got off the interstate at exit 108, GA-120, and took that over to Duluth. Rick’s Smokin’ Pig, Gainesville GA

In the previous chapter, I explained that there are five barbecue restaurants in the Gainesville area that I wanted to try, two of which had some prior press that I had noticed. The second of these was Rick’s Smokin’ Pig, which admittedly has not had very much hobbyist coverage – it has only been open for three years – but the hobbyist who brought it to my attention it was the indefatigable Chopped Onion. Hickory Pig BBQ, Gainesville GA

In a chapter last week, I mentioned that I have a project in mind to cover a certain west Georgia barbecue corridor better than anybody else has done before. Another notion is to visit considerably more places in the Gainesville area than we have. Each of these are fairly doable, but there are just so many miles in the Urbanspoon Gainesville metro – the city of Gainesville itself is reasonably compact, but, as defined in Urbanspoon, it stretches across a lot more territory than you’d think, incorporating everyplace from Dahlonega to Helen to Hoschton – that it’s really difficult to trace a reasonable route to stop by the five places that I wanted to sample.
