Olympic Flame, Atlanta GA

It felt like an unusually long shoot while it was here, but most of the location work for the film Anchorman 2 was done here in Atlanta between March and May, with our city apparently filling in for both 1970s San Diego and New York. Back in March, always thinking about what might make an interesting story, I read that a restaurant called Olympic Flame on Marietta Street had been transformed, via that Hollywood magic!, into a fried chicken restaurant owned by David Koechner’s character, Champ Kind. I rushed over with my camera as soon as I could, but was too late. The film crews had used the location for one day and promptly removed the fake signage. Other bloggers got there with more speed than me, and links to them can be found below. Soon after, production was seen at The Silver Skillet on 14th Street. Ammons Drive-In and Dairy Bar, Waynesville NC

We agreed that it had been a disagreeably long time since we visited Asheville, and so began scheduling a trip. Stillhouse Craft Burgers & Moonshine, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)

One of the most pleasant surprises that we’ve had in recent months has been our visit to Stillhouse, where we were anticipating some pretty good bar burgers and were given, instead, some downright excellent ones. The Red-Eyed Mule, Marietta GA (take two)

Please don’t look around in our archives for our original story about The Red-Eyed Mule. It was written before we actually started the blog in any formal, branded sense, and was one of a handful of entries – probably the first six or seven, I suppose – that was scripted as a regular entry on my old Livejournal. Speaking Portuguese

Marie had been reminding her father that he was overdue for a visit. Up in Memphis, her sister had moved into a new apartment. Their father decided to take a road trip, incorporating their brother in Starkville and see all three of his kids, and he had an additional reason to come to Atlanta. He already knows several languages, and he’s recently decided to add Portuguese to his lexicon. Saint Simons Island, where he lives, has lots to recommend it, but it seems to lack many native speakers. Atlanta, on the other hand, not only do we have the Brazilian Consulate General, we’ve also got more than a dozen Brazilian restaurants. That makes for plenty of opportunities for my father-in-law to practice his Portuguese. Continue reading “Speaking Portuguese”

Old Favorites and New in Chattanooga

For a couple of years, I’ve been curious about a dive bar on Frazier along Chattanooga’s North Shore, right where we turn to go down to Coolidge Park. On this latest trip to the Scenic City, it finally won out and I decided to give it a try, in spite of some quite negative reviews elsewhere. Normally, I don’t pay much attention to these, but some of them were really strongly negative, to the point where I would feel bad taking Marie and the children there knowing that a letdown had been foretold. So I came up with a plan B. Marie and the girlchild would each pick a place where they wanted to eat, old or new, anywhere along the corridor, and we’d visit three restaurants that way.
