Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Riverside in St. Marys. I’d taken a rare opportunity to kidnap my boy for a weekend at my folks’ while Grant and the teenager did their own thing. It worked so well we plan to do it in reverse this spring. Continue reading “Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA”

Roxx Tavern, Atlanta GA (take two)

From time to time, we have commented how it’s not entirely fair to form a first impression of a restaurant, or “judge” it in any public fashion, based on the experience that you get during a festival, when the staff can be completely overwhelmed. Call it grading on a curve, I suppose. With that in mind, Roxx Tavern had been on my mind for a revisit for quite a few weeks (here’s the original story). I made it over to their store on Cheshire Bridge – they’ve since opened a second location in Tucker – one Friday afternoon recently. It should have been the after-lunch lull, about 2:15, but they were still pretty busy, hosting several large parties and their patio was more than half-filled. Then I remembered: this was Pride Weekend, and Roxx has been a Pride destination, for locals and for tourists, for many years. Continue reading “Roxx Tavern, Atlanta GA (take two)”

LongHorn Steakhouse, Kennesaw GA

We get a few more media invitations than we can realistically entertain, but I paused when LongHorn Steakhouse reached out to us, and, after I thought about it, I decided that I’d like to give them a try. A friend asked me whether I was feeling well. I took the ribbing because the simple fact is that, other than its less-than-stellar reputation among us food hobbyists (to put it mildly), I knew next to nothing about the chain. I thought that was unfair and decided that I wanted to see what LongHorn was actually about, rather than relying on perception. Continue reading “LongHorn Steakhouse, Kennesaw GA”

The Epicurean Restaurant, East Ridge TN

We had a couple of big disappointments on our latest trip to Chattanooga. Sure, we enjoyed shopping for books and records at Winder Binder, and had some good sodas from Pure Sodaworks – their soda fountain is now set up inside Clumpie’s Ice Cream, and their Sweet Orange flavor is one of their very best – but we were sad to see that the Coolidge Park fountains were closed for repair. The three year-old was really looking forward to playing in them. Continue reading “The Epicurean Restaurant, East Ridge TN”

Marlow’s Tavern, Sandy Springs GA

Marlow’s Tavern is one of the many places in Atlanta that we began to overlook when we started the blog. It was a perfectly good place to eat – I’ll entertain a suggestion that it may have been somebody with whom I may have been stepping out before Marie and I got together who enjoyed it a good deal – but perhaps a bit more of a corporate chain than we typically visit. PoBoys Cajun Grill, Florence AL

Here’s an experience that we hope is never repeated. Back in April, when we made the special announcement post about Florence Restaurant Week, one of our readers left a comment inviting us to stop by the restaurant where she worked. PoBoys Cajun Grill opened in October of 2013, and even though it was not participating in the event, we decided that it would be nice to stop by and say hello. The Brickery Grill & Bar, Sandy Springs GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing an article about The Brickery Grill & Bar, which styles itself as a neighborhood restaurant. Bruce and Sally Alterman, the owners, just passed their 22nd anniversary, and to celebrate they had a bunch of bloggers over to check out the food and comment on it. Well, I’m sure they had other celebrations as well, probably involving cake. If you decide to venture out for a visit, make sure you go past the sign at the entrance of the strip mall and back into the other side of the parking lot, as the red sign on Roswell is just there to tell you where to turn.
