Since beginning the blog, we’ve happily learned about how traditional, authentic Chinese cooking is not a great deal like the suburban Golden-This-Happy-That places that shovel out Kung Pao chicken. But what about Thai cuisine? There are many similarities between American-Chinese cuisine and what we see in Thai restaurants around the Atlanta area. Most Thai restaurants have that same “please everybody” feel, with deep menus. Many of the same dishes appear on every one of their menus. Satay chicken is as predictable an option at a Thai restaurant in Atlanta as sweet and sour chicken is at a Golden-This-Happy-That. While we’ve enjoyed several good and several pleasing meals at Thai restaurants over the last few years (here are a few), I’m not sure that we’ve found a genuinely authentic experience, but, instead, we’ve found very tasty compromises made for the American market. Little Thai, Sandy Springs GA
A few Fridays ago, the kids and I fought the rush hour to meet Marie for dinner and spare her the rush hour commute home. We invited Emily from Spatialdrift to join us; Adam had the good fortune to fly out to the San Diego Comic-Con that weekend. This prompted the umpteen millionth discussion between my daughter and me about the difference between “lucky” and “fortunate.” I really, really hope that she gets this point one day. This wearying discussion concluded, I was happier to then show off the nearby fire station to the toddler, for him to smile and laugh about the fire trucks. Little Thai is in a curving strip mall on Sandy Springs Circle just before it meets Johnson Ferry. The section where we parked overlooks the fire station, and is perfect for kids to yell greetings to firemen. Continue reading “Little Thai, Sandy Springs GA”
Penang, Chamblee GA
It is so good to know that we’re not the only ones who overplan, lay out our meals and set off on road trips with a stack of printouts from Google Maps. I did a little reading before we went to lunch with our friends Helen and Vincent at a Malaysian and Thai place called Penang and found a fun, albeit sadly dormant Boston-based blog called Sea Salted (linked below). Kate, the writer of that blog, confessed to the same habit. After I finished reading her recommendations about what to try at Penang, settling on the Crispy Golden Fried Squid, I enjoyed reading the rest of her road trip story. I’m sorry that she’s no longer writing, but I’m sure she’s doing well. She has the right mind set. Continue reading “Penang, Chamblee GA”
Bill’s Donut Shop, Centerville OH
It took us twelve hours, but we finally made it to Dayton. The toddler was unbelievably good for the trip. He whimpered and got frustrated a few times, which was to be expected, but he handled the road trip like a champion, even as we got caught in the northbound sludge of Cincinnati’s evening rush hour, and was rewarded with the awesome and welcome sight of Mommy in the hotel lobby. Thai 9, Dayton OH
This is Marie, contributing an article about Thai 9. By chance, my work had sent me to Dayton on the eve of Election Day and I had been looking forward to the time after work when I would sit down in front of the TV in the hotel room with snack food and enjoy the spectator sport of politics in a swing state. I anticipated (rightly, as it turned out) that this would closely resemble a trip to a Roman Coliseum. Continue reading “Thai 9, Dayton OH”
Red Elephant Thai Cuisine, Marietta GA
Let’s start the new year off right by trying to bring some business to a place that’s having some slow Saturday nights. Continue reading “Red Elephant Thai Cuisine, Marietta GA”
TupTim Thai, Brunswick GA
This is Marie, making the first of a couple of contributions from a side trip I made independently. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but there was this one place that I went with my father that really ought to have included Grant to help out. We needed more plates on the table to taste from, and an additional person to make one more appetizer practical. Continue reading “TupTim Thai, Brunswick GA”
