That Pig’s Not Going to Cook Himself… or is he?

When you combine our good-natured silliness with an eye for restaurant design, it’s inevitable that one day, we would subject you dear readers to a post about a business’s signs. That day has finally come. Somewhere, sometime, a particular pig made his way into some clip art file somewhere, and sign companies across the southeast have been suggesting to their clients that this happy porker advertise their barbecue restaurants. Blue Bell Makes Ice Cream at The Children’s Museum of Atlanta

This is Marie, contributing a tiny little article about ice cream. You see, for National Ice Cream Day, Blue Bell sent a couple of representatives to The Children’s Museum of Atlanta to show kids how to make ice cream, and to hand out samples of their Homemade Vanilla. Habanero’s Taqueria, Woodstock GA

Last month, I mentioned that I’d found some places in north Cobb that sounded interesting, and that Marie and our girlchild were taking turns selecting restaurants from the list. It was my daughter’s turn and she wanted to visit the Mexican place on the list, so we drove up a few exits to Woodstock and a new place called Habanero’s Taqueria. It opened in a strip mall near GA-92, in the space that had previously been the home of another Mexican-style restaurant, El Cafetero. Continue reading “Habanero’s Taqueria, Woodstock GA”

Red, White, and Blue Potato Salad

This is Marie, writing about a recipe inspired by a purchase from our local farmer’s market. One of the booths had a large display that called out to me – it was a row of baskets containing multicolored very small fingerling potatoes. I was thinking of cooking them as a side for meatballs (next time maybe…) but the merchant mentioned that they had used them for red, white and blue potato salad – and this being the weekend before July 4th, it made perfect sense. I don’t usually make potato salad, out of deference to Grant’s decision to cut it (tragically, and much missed) from his diet, but declared that this was a special case and he conceded. Martin’s, Austell GA

Ages back, sometime in this blog’s infancy, I intended to follow a metaphor to its conclusion and tell you good readers a little about Martin’s. As metaphors go, this is not the most accurate, but you know how Birmingham is home to a fast food chain called Milo’s and it is surrounded in the suburbs by another chain called Jack’s? Well, Zesto in Atlanta is similarly surrounded in this city’s suburbs by Martin’s. Kind of. I mean, there are something like 140 Jack’s all over north Alabama and peeking into neighboring states, and there are only fifteen Martin’s, almost all of which are in the northwestern suburbs and nowhere near an interstate exit, but it’s a little bit similar. Ethiopian Lentil Stew with Penzeys Berbere Seasoning

As this blog kind of transitioned away from cooking stories – a mistake, and one we wish to correct – we haven’t talked quite as much about our favorite spice store, Penzeys. We have visited their locations in Memphis, Birmingham, and Atlanta (Sandy Springs), and completely love their products, their focus, and their amazing employees. Au Rendez-Vous, Chamblee GA

This is Marie, with an article about a French restaurant where we enjoyed a spontaneous meal a few weeks ago. The four of us went out on Saturday evening intending to hang out with some buddies, but as they were unavoidably detained and the place selected would have been the second pizza joint in two days, we looked around at the places close to where we were when plans changed. Thank goodness for Urbanspoon’s mobile ap. We allowed the baby to keep one of the six golf balls he had found in the grass at a park in Chamblee (nothing delights a toddler as much as a ball of any kind), and went to Au Rendez-vous Cafe Bistro instead. One recommendation – if you have two cars, take the smaller one. Parking is not spacious. Continue reading “Au Rendez-Vous, Chamblee GA”
