Captain John’s Hot Pit Bar-B-Q, Collierville TN

Barbecue is always on my mind when I visit Memphis, and this trip up US-72 allowed us to visit one of the less heralded barbecue places in the region. It’s probably the first that anybody using this highway will spot after they cross the state line. Continue reading “Captain John’s Hot Pit Bar-B-Q, Collierville TN”

Borroum’s Drug Store, Corinth MS

For the next stop on our trip to Memphis via US-72, we visited what is probably the oldest business that we have ever featured at our blog, eclipsing even Payne’s in Scottsboro AL. Borroum’s Drug Store opened in 1865, and moved to its present home across from the Alcorn County Courthouse in 1873. The owners still dispense prescriptions and sundries today, though the attraction for out-of-towners, of course, is their soda fountain. Continue reading “Borroum’s Drug Store, Corinth MS”

Staggs Grocery, Florence AL

In May, we all set off on a four-day trip to Memphis, where Marie’s sister was graduating from college. I’d been planning and charting and getting ideas together for weeks, and decided that we’d take a slight detour by going north across Alabama instead of fighting the rush hour traffic into and around Atlanta to use the interstates. That route, through Birmingham and Tupelo, is the most direct, but taking GA-140 to Huntsville and using US-72 ALT took us back to the Shoals, which is probably my favorite region of Alabama.

Going this way allowed us to revisit the beautiful city of Florence, which I love, and stop by Staggs, an old, former grocery store that now sells breakfast and burgers. I wish I had paid attention and visited this great little place the last time we were here! Continue reading “Staggs Grocery, Florence AL”

McKinnon’s Louisiane, Atlanta GA

As we continued turning down PR invitations for hot new launches and thumbing our noses at Atlanta’s coolest and hippest and newest places in favor of looking into the past at much older restaurants, our travels took us to McKinnon’s Louisiane, which opened in the mid-1970s, when Buckhead was not quite as rich and trendy as it is today. The restaurant, a dry cleaner, and a music store occupy a distinctly downmarket little strip mall that’s visible from Peachtree. I think that every developer in the southeast is drooling over this prime bit of real estate. Continue reading “McKinnon’s Louisiane, Atlanta GA”

Andy’s BBQ, Eatonton GA

One of the nicest parts of our hobby is stumbling across a place that we’ve never heard of and having a terrific meal. This doesn’t happen very frequently. Most of the great, destination-worthy restaurants that we visit have already been documented by somebody somewhere and end up on our to-do list. We often find good meals without hoopla, but when we find something great, we are left wondering why the heck nobody else is talking about it. Continue reading “Andy’s BBQ, Eatonton GA”

Paradise Country Bar-B-Que, Milledgeville GA

Continuing further north up US-441 outside of Milledgeville, the road took us to a place I’d heard about many years before. If you’ve been reading for ages, you may know that I keep an eye out for a bizarre little bit of clip art of a particular pig that keeps showing up on the signs of barbecue restaurants. Oddly, lots of restaurants go in for images of smiling and dancing oinkers, cartoony and happy to be part of your meal. That’s silly enough on its own, but there’s this one particularly bizarre pig who’s either preparing to cook himself, or the rest of the herd. John Pluta’s group of blogs about restaurants in middle and south Georgia, not presently active but guaranteed to be absolutely fascinating in the future, mentioned this place. I won’t imply that I was in a rush to visit, but at least I knew that if the road was going to take me to Milledgeville, there’d be something else to eat. Old Clinton Bar-B-Q, Milledgeville GA

One of my all-time favorite barbecue restaurants is Old Clinton Bar-B-Q. We’ve visited their place in Gray a handful of times over the years (not nearly enough, but most recently last Christmas), and I fell immediately in love with their chopped pork, their stew, and their mild vinegar-pepper sauce. They simply do remarkable work here, and I was curious whether their second location, in Milledgeville, was as good. Continue reading “Old Clinton Bar-B-Q, Milledgeville GA”
