Marie loves to start her day with a cup of tea, and loves all the wonderful flavors that she samples from places like Stash, or David’s, or Teavana. So I’ve had a pretty good feeling for years that she would enjoy a trip to the wonderfully-named Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party in Candler Park, which opened in 2007. I wish that I could tell you that it’s located between a men’s clothing store called Uncle Arthur’s and a hippie shop called Serena’s, but that’s because I probably enjoyed the classic sitcom Bewitched more than anybody else. Burnt Fork BBQ, Decatur GA (CLOSED)
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a date night that initially served as our anniversary, because we were not certain we’d get any time to ourselves on the actual date that we tied the knot. Well, fortune moved its huge hand and we did indeed get just about a whole day to play. We started just after the lunch rush at Burnt Fork BBQ in Decatur. It had been on my to-do list longer than any other barbecue place in the Atlanta area, so we drove over here. Continue reading “Burnt Fork BBQ, Decatur GA (CLOSED)”
Varasano’s Pizzeria, Atlanta GA (take two)
I’m afraid that I unwittingly insulted the awesome Jeff Varasano when we visited for dinner one Sunday evening a couple of months ago. Marie and the three year-old and I were at Varasano’s Pizzeria along with Marie’s mother, enjoying some quite fantastic pies. Jeff was making the rounds, asking how people were enjoying things and doing Rubik’s Cubes in under thirty seconds. As party tricks go, that’s a pretty impressive one. I told Jeff how much I enjoyed that recent interview with Serious Eats, and then, because I got tongue-tied, I spittundled out something about Vingenzo’s, up in Woodstock, that sounded like I was saying Jeff’s pies were second-rate to those. Not so. Continue reading “Varasano’s Pizzeria, Atlanta GA (take two)”
One Star Ranch, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)
Through the late 1990s, Atlanta was home to a pair of barbecue restaurants called The Rib Ranch. They each went in for Texas-themed design and big plates of ribs, and, without a lot of foodie fuss, had a small legion of fans. Today, they are owned by different relations within the same family. The Marietta store, which we wrote about in the spring of 2013, is still called The Rib Ranch. The one in Buckhead, on Irby Street, changed its name to One Star Ranch in the early 2000s, and branched out to an additional location in Alpharetta that lasted from 2002-2011. Chow Bing Chinese Grill, Atlanta GA
I always really enjoy talking with Gary Lin. He’s one of Atlanta’s most criminally underrated chefs, a guy who believes very strongly in food sustainability and healthy ideals. With Chow Bing, he’s come up with a very good menu – even if one item on it is a little bizarre – but the success of large crowds and lots of buzz outside the hobbyist gang has so far eluded him. In part that’s because he opened the first Chow Bing in a very tough location. There’s absolutely no pedestrian traffic crossing the downtown connector from Grady to the Pencil Factory Lofts. So he’s rolled the dice on a big real estate gamble and opened a second location in a much more visible shopping center in Buckhead, diagonally across the parking lot from the “Disco Kroger.” Last month, he invited the Association of Food Bloggers to sample the menu. Marlow’s Tavern, Sandy Springs GA
Marlow’s Tavern is one of the many places in Atlanta that we began to overlook when we started the blog. It was a perfectly good place to eat – I’ll entertain a suggestion that it may have been somebody with whom I may have been stepping out before Marie and I got together who enjoyed it a good deal – but perhaps a bit more of a corporate chain than we typically visit. Food Truck Date Night
Marie and I celebrated five years of her putting up with me a few weeks ago. Well, actually, it’s been more like twenty, but it’s only been five years of her doing it deliberately. And because we’re the most romantic souls in town, we did it getting dust and gravel on our shoes and eating at two separate food trucks. As is distressingly common, in order to make up for the karmic retribution of me totally getting the better end of the “married to an awesome person” arrangement, she got a much, much better meal than I did. This happens often enough that I simply shrug it off as “menu envy.” This was the first time it was applied to an entire truck, however. Continue reading “Food Truck Date Night”
