If our statistics are any indication, the barbecue map that I built for the CommunityWalk site is one of the most popular features on our site. There’s a link to it at the bottom of just about every chapter about a barbecue restaurant that we’ve posted over the last couple of years and it gets a lot of traffic from barbecue lovers. I was looking at it a few months ago and decided that the eastern suburbs were underrepresented on it. I picked four to visit, stopped by one of them in October, and, one Saturday last month while Marie was working, I took the kids out for an indulgent day of three lunches. Big Shanty Smokehouse, Kennesaw GA (take two)
This is Marie, writing atypically about barbecue. We had invited our friends Adam and Emily from Spatialdrift out to the back of beyond — excuse me, suburban Kennesaw — for a visit to our side of town, to one of our favored local BBQ places, Big Shanty Smokehouse. The owner, Chic Dillard, has only been there since 2008, not long before I moved to this area myself. We have been going there for years and really enjoy it. Dreamland BBQ, Roswell GA
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Marie and I had been very impressed with Moe’s Original, a barbecue chain out of Colorado that traces its origins back to Tuscaloosa. There’s another barbecue chain from that city with a foothold in Atlanta. It’s Dreamland, and while Moe’s Original is mostly an unknown quantity, you get talking with barbecue lovers in this or any town and when Dreamland comes up, more often than not, you’ll see a shaking of the head and a furrowed brow. Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que, Atlanta GA
Generalizing a little bit here, but if bloggers and hobbyists tend not to be that interested in chains, then barbecue bloggers are ten times tougher on them. The sadly-abandoned Gentleman’s Guide to Swine Dining had a term he used, “the franchise curse.” We all know what he was talking about.
A couple of years ago, I’d heard that the Alabama-by-way-of-Colorado chain, Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que, had opened a location in Atlanta. It’s on 14th Street west of the connector, about a third of a mile past The Silver Skillet and across the street, in the building that once housed Kool Korners. It didn’t seem like anything that I needed to rush to try in Atlanta. One of these days, I’d like to make another trip to the Birmingham area and visit the original Jim ‘n Nick’s, and the original Golden Rule, for example, but I’m just not all that interested in franchises. Finding the right words can be a problem.
Y’all know that we don’t often dig in with negative reviews at this blog of ours, and when we do, it’s qualified as much as possible with whatever praise we can find. Having said that, the ride back to Atlanta from Putnam County brought me to a pair of barbecue joints which I’d like to mention for posterity’s sake. The first of these is Dave’s BBQ and Soul Food in Monticello. I got a big grin when I spotted the sign out front, because it’s another appearance of the strange Cannibal Cook Pig who haunts the southeast. Kinorhook Bar-B-Que, Eatonton GA
I left Milledgeville using GA-212, figuring that to be the road that made the most interesting course through middle Georgia, a corridor that I’d never seen before. While I did not have anything planned after I left the Shrimp Boats, I did have an idea that I wanted to try. I got about ten miles out of town and pulled up Urbanspoon’s mobile app and asked what was nearby. It said that I was 4.9 miles from Kinorhook Bar-B-Que and so that became my next destination. That’s much more effective than hoping to see a road sign! In point of fact, if I hadn’t used the mobile app, I wouldn’t have seen a sign at all; I had to turn right and go a little north on US-129, and the sign is on that road, not the one that I was driving. Familiar Flavors in Different Locations, Macon GA
Late last month, Marie and I took another short trip to Macon to meet her mother and let Marie drive her the rest of the way into the traffic and sprawl of Atlanta.
