Carl’s Drive-Inn, Loudon TN

Last year, we had thought about a fall trip to Knoxville, but it didn’t happen for one reason or ten. Still, I’d put together a small to-do list since it looked as though we’d be visiting the town of Loudon on that trip, and a small canopied drive-in stood out as a must. Well, it’s either a drive-in or a drive-inn; even the building’s own signage is confused on that point. Carl Whited, who passed away in 2012, opened this place in April of 1960. We’re always happy to visit a 56 year-old restaurant. Continue reading “Carl’s Drive-Inn, Loudon TN”

Grub Burger Bar, Atlanta GA

Atlanta’s reputation as a city for great burgers led a chain from Texas, Grub Burger Bar, to open a couple of stores in town. Grub is still fairly small, with only twelve locations in Texas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Delaware, and Pennsylania. Their website lists five more locations in the works within these states as well. Continue reading “Grub Burger Bar, Atlanta GA”

The White Tiger Gourmet, Athens GA (take two)

So what do you get when you mix a hundred-some old grocery store building in Athens’ old mill community around Hiawassee and Boulevard with a Culinary Institute of America grad, Ken Manring? You get the best burger in Athens for the last several years. I made my fourth visit to White Tiger Gourmet during last month’s trip to Athens, and wanted to tell all you good readers again how terrific the burgers here are. (Here’s our original story, from June 2010.) Continue reading “The White Tiger Gourmet, Athens GA (take two)”

Ferrell’s Hamburgers, Hopkinsville KY

On the Friday of our trip, our friend Louis had been telling us about a chain of burger places that used to have multiple locations throughout western Kentucky. He said that Ferrell’s had once been a very special place. They had an outlet in his hometown, Henderson, along with multiple stores in Owensboro and Bowling Green. These days, they were down from perhaps a dozen stores to just three, in the towns of Cadiz, Hopkinsville, and Madisonville, and he believed that the survivors were nowhere as good as the Henderson store once was. G.D. Ritzy’s, Evansville IN

This is Marie, contributing an article about a visit we made with our friend Louis to G. D. Ritzy’s for a cheeseburger and a snack for the 4-year-old, who’d been muttering about the food in the other places we ate and was wasting away on us. If we’d had any sense we’d have come for the ice cream, but then that’s my prejudices in favor of dessert coming out! Continue reading “G.D. Ritzy’s, Evansville IN”

Elliston Place Soda Shop, Nashville TN

Longtime readers may remember that we have some good friends in the Music City, and that I like to leave a blank or two in the schedule, where possible, to go where they recommend when we visit. Last month, as I’ll discuss in subsequent chapters, I made a return trip to western Kentucky to dig a little bit deeper into the region’s food, and, this time, I brought Marie and our son. I also brought our daughter for a short part of the trip; she went to spend Thanksgiving with some of her family up that way, and all four of us settled down for supper with some of our friends at one of Nashville’s oldest surviving restaurants. Elliston Place Soda Shop originally opened in 1939. It survived a landlord-induced closure scare four years ago, and we hope that it’s around for a long time to come, because it’s really good. Chapter 1300: Ann’s Snack Bar, Atlanta GA

For our 700th metro Atlanta restaurant, we wanted to go someplace special. Over the years, I’d wanted to go with Marie to Ann’s Snack Bar many times, but we couldn’t coordinate schedules with enough time to spare. There was one instance where I almost stopped by on my own, but found the restaurant closed for the day. Happily, everything worked right when she had a Friday off and came to meet me for a long lunch. Continue reading “Chapter 1300: Ann’s Snack Bar, Atlanta GA”
