El Autentico Sinaloense Pollos Asados, Doraville GA

Do any Atlantans remember El Pollo Loco, or has it been forgotten already? The California-based chain only had a fleeting presence in this market – perhaps nine stores, maybe, in a four-year period – but for those of us who visited it, it left good memories. Their schtick was flame-grilled chicken, with a nice, flavorful, perfectly seasoned taste that wasn’t too dry despite the evident char on the meat. A little squirt of lime juice and that just did me fine. Continue reading “El Autentico Sinaloense Pollos Asados, Doraville GA”

Penang, Chamblee GA

It is so good to know that we’re not the only ones who overplan, lay out our meals and set off on road trips with a stack of printouts from Google Maps. I did a little reading before we went to lunch with our friends Helen and Vincent at a Malaysian and Thai place called Penang and found a fun, albeit sadly dormant Boston-based blog called Sea Salted (linked below). Kate, the writer of that blog, confessed to the same habit. After I finished reading her recommendations about what to try at Penang, settling on the Crispy Golden Fried Squid, I enjoyed reading the rest of her road trip story. I’m sorry that she’s no longer writing, but I’m sure she’s doing well. She has the right mind set. Continue reading “Penang, Chamblee GA”

Nam Phuong, Atlanta GA

The first time that I ever tried Vietnamese cooking, it was a year and a half ago, when I went up to Jimmy Carter Boulevard, that well-meaning but generally ineffective avenue in the Norcross area, to visit the much talked-about Nam Phuong. I left with that curious feeling of being pleased but dissatisfied. The food that I ate was good, but I didn’t have anybody to share the experience with, and I just sort of had to hope for the best. Pho Dai Loi #2, Atlanta GA

As I fumble and bumble my way through learning a little bit more here and there about different cuisines and the regions what concocted ’em, the road took me back over to Buford Highway to sample a little more Vietnamese cooking. Marie and I had intended for some time to dig back into this part of town and try some more pho parlors, but our weekends became backlogged, especially with out-of-town guests and preparations for her big, long bizness trip to Ohio. So even though we’ve established that Marie enjoys Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese foods more than I do, I decided to make a solo outing to Buford Highway and see what I could find, and maybe see whether my preconceived notions could be foiled. Continue reading “Pho Dai Loi #2, Atlanta GA”

Maison Robert, Chamblee GA

This is Marie, writing a very small article about a very small chocolate shop. You knew I’d have to come back to sweets, right? Anyway, there is a chocolate shop in Asheville that is my true favorite, but I will cheat on them occasionally with Maison Robert now that we have become acquainted. Pho and Bánh mì

So, another expedition over to Chamblee to get something to eat from the city’s most eclectic and one of the most fun stretches of road. This time, the objective was to sample a little Vietnamese cuisine from a couple of places. We got some good recommendations from some of our fellow bloggers for what to try here. Leslie from The Food and Me suggested that we try a bowl of beef noodle soup from Pho Bac, and Jason from Kitchen Man Can suggested that we get a traditional bánh mì sandwich from Lee’s Bakery. Both restaurants have been written about fairly extensively. So we loaded up the children two Saturdays back and took off for Buford Highway. Continue reading “Pho and Bánh mì”

Mexican Chains on Buford Highway

A few chapters ago, I mentioned my desire to visit more restaurants along the Buford Highway corridor, and sample more traditional and authentic tastes. I figured that Marie and I would enjoy some Asian restaurants together, but I would give some Mexican places a try by myself, as I enjoy traditional tacos and sauces more than she does. So, a couple of Fridays back, I made my way to visit two well-known stores. They’re both outposts of small Atlanta-based chains. El Taco Veloz currently has six stores, and Las Tortas Locas currently has seven. Continue reading “Mexican Chains on Buford Highway”
