Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Riverside in St. Marys. I’d taken a rare opportunity to kidnap my boy for a weekend at my folks’ while Grant and the teenager did their own thing. It worked so well we plan to do it in reverse this spring. Continue reading “Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA”

Ribalta, Atlanta GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about a visit to Ribalta, which invited me and some of our blogging friends, Atlanta Restaurant Blog and Iron Stef, to visit their new store in midtown. They just opened in Atlanta, expanding from their original New York location, with a process for pizza dough that they say results in a lighter, lower gluten crust. Chef Pasquale Cozzolino regenerates his dough every day from a yeast starter that has been used for the past 80 years. It’s a symptom of the times that when I heard the starter had been brought over from Italy, the first thought I had was “Yeah, right, they’d never let THAT through Customs!” But Customs wasn’t quite so strict in the past. Chicken and sweet pepper fettuccine

During Grant’s late night insomnia periods, he’s often surfing food blogs and sending me far more recipes than we’ll ever have the chance to try. One Sunday morning, I woke to find this one in my inbox and it sounded so interesting that we tried it that evening. It’s from a blog called Vittles and Voyages and it was very good! Yo Bo Cantina Fresca, Athens GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing an article about Yo Bo Cantina Fresca, a brand new place in the Five Points area. It has another branch in Charleston SC which made it into the Huffpost list of places to visit there. Yo Bo uses Springer Mountain chicken and uses locally sourced ingredients where possible, according to their menu, and the food really tasted fresh and vivid. The Summer of Many Jams

This is Marie, contributing an article about jam. Jam has occupied a fairly prominent place in my summer, to the extent that our easily embarrassed teenager has decided to become mortified about the number of jars in storage. She claims to be alarmed that we could never eat that much jam. First, much of it has been all along intended for gifts, including a good many that went out to friends for taste testing; and second, I can eat an astonishing amount of jam. Thirdly, if it’s at all important, some got diverted to a yard sale. Continue reading “The Summer of Many Jams”

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Marietta GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about froyo. Actually, I brought along our froyo expert, the teenager. She likes froyo more than anybody else and makes “Ooooh, shiny” type noises every time we pass any froyo place. However, as our regular readers are aware, I am the serious dessert fiend of the family, but I have an abusive relationship with dairy. I am, regrettably, lactose intolerant. While of course (of COURSE!) I prefer the high-butterfat, extremely creamy, hard-as-a-brick-when-cold type of ice cream, the active cultures in frozen yogurt mean I can have a bowl without it hating me back. Nevertheless I took it easy. Continue reading “Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Marietta GA”

Zeal, Marietta GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Zeal Modern Eatery. I had been invited to join some friends there for an evening meet-up and menu sampling, and really enjoyed the place. Sadly, it was raining so I did not take photos of the exterior, but it’s in the end of a strip mall so a) easy to find and b) looks much like any other store. The interior is pretty, though, with the bar area separated from the tables so if you care to watch the widescreen with a drink you won’t be given stinkeye by people trying to have dinner.
