This is Marie, contributing an article about The Brickery Grill & Bar, which styles itself as a neighborhood restaurant. Bruce and Sally Alterman, the owners, just passed their 22nd anniversary, and to celebrate they had a bunch of bloggers over to check out the food and comment on it. Well, I’m sure they had other celebrations as well, probably involving cake. If you decide to venture out for a visit, make sure you go past the sign at the entrance of the strip mall and back into the other side of the parking lot, as the red sign on Roswell is just there to tell you where to turn. Esther Price Chocolates, Centerville OH
This is Marie, contributing an article about Esther Price chocolates. Esther Price is a company based in Dayton, OH, where we nearly moved in 2012. I went up there to visit for work a few times, and checked out a few restaurants. One of the things I looked for was chocolates, in part because I am a complete candyholic, and in part because one of the visits was in December, when my mind is on interesting gifts for people. Everyone I talked to about chocolates mentioned Esther Price, both with enjoyment and a considerable amount of hometown pride. Continue reading “Esther Price Chocolates, Centerville OH”
Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about Everyday Organic, a restaurant in Greenville that is, sadly, much too far away. I really enjoyed my meal there and would have very much liked to try more of their offerings. Continue reading “Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)”
The Real Chow Baby, Atlanta GA (take two) (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about another location of a place we’d been to and enjoyed, and we wanted to see what (and how) the original was doing. Booming business, it appeared; the place was completely packed and there were ridiculous lines for the food bar. But I get ahead of myself. Banana Bread
This is Marie, sharing my own recipe for banana bread, arrived at over years of fiddling and originally derived from (I think) something in the Joy of Cooking. I really like banana bread, but only if it is moist and dense and richly banana-flavored. I made quite a few loaves that looked and tasted like bricks, using various recipes that people swore were great, before deciding to mess around with the recipe until it was actually right. One thing I discovered is that the texture I wanted really required Crisco, not butter. Another was that many recipes call for far too many bananas. Lastly was that salt is actually required, as it keeps the batter from getting too dry. So the commentary on bread that comes below the recipe is mostly what I learned while teaching myself how to bake. So if it’s written on a beginner level, that’s why – I developed this as a beginning baker. Continue reading “Banana Bread”
Mustard Chicken
This is Marie, contributing an article about a recipe I tried for Mustard Chicken. Here’s the original recipe that Grant found for me. This one didn’t turn out perfect, but it was intriguing enough to require a return for more experimentation. I want to tweak this a bit and make it work better. Continue reading “Mustard Chicken”
Big Shanty Smokehouse, Kennesaw GA (take two)
This is Marie, writing atypically about barbecue. We had invited our friends Adam and Emily from Spatialdrift out to the back of beyond — excuse me, suburban Kennesaw — for a visit to our side of town, to one of our favored local BBQ places, Big Shanty Smokehouse. The owner, Chic Dillard, has only been there since 2008, not long before I moved to this area myself. We have been going there for years and really enjoy it. It was actually the first barbecue restaurant that we ever wrote about at this blog, almost four years ago. Continue reading “Big Shanty Smokehouse, Kennesaw GA (take two)”
