The Red-Eyed Mule, Marietta GA (take two)

Please don’t look around in our archives for our original story about The Red-Eyed Mule. It was written before we actually started the blog in any formal, branded sense, and was one of a handful of entries – probably the first six or seven, I suppose – that was scripted as a regular entry on my old Livejournal. As our first story, it is an interesting archaeological curio, but not a particularly auspicious launch to our hobby. Continue reading “The Red-Eyed Mule, Marietta GA (take two)”

Righteous ‘Que, Marietta GA

While I’m not certain quite how many barbecue restaurants in the Atlanta region are left to try, we’ve been to 53 of them since we started, and only have another five or six on the radar. Most of those that remain have already been visited by Andy of Burgers, Barbecue and Everything Else, a very good blog that covers out-of-the-way and small places like we do, although his travel radius is much larger. So I dropped Andy a line and asked whether he’d like to meet up at some place that neither of us had yet visited. We batted some ideas back and forth, and I remembered that Dustin, who writes the (sadly) mostly dormant Georgia Barbecue Hunt, had found a new place in Marietta called Righteous ‘Que at the end of July. Speaking Portuguese

Marie had been reminding her father that he was overdue for a visit. Up in Memphis, her sister had moved into a new apartment. Their father decided to take a road trip, incorporating their brother in Starkville and see all three of his kids, and he had an additional reason to come to Atlanta. He already knows several languages, and he’s recently decided to add Portuguese to his lexicon. Saint Simons Island, where he lives, has lots to recommend it, but it seems to lack many native speakers. Atlanta, on the other hand, not only do we have the Brazilian Consulate General, we’ve also got more than a dozen Brazilian restaurants. That makes for plenty of opportunities for my father-in-law to practice his Portuguese. Continue reading “Speaking Portuguese”

Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint # 18, Marietta GA

Marie and I were invited to stop by the latest location of Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint, a chain based in Atlanta that is rapidly growing through the southeast. The East Cobb Uncle Maddio’s location is the second unit for franchisees John Dayton and David Tracht, who also own and operate another store in Woodstock, which was the first franchised location in the company. Brandi’s World Famous Hot Dogs, Marietta GA (take two)

A few weeks ago, I looked back at some of our earliest posts and was depressed by the really, really poor photography across the board. One of the most depressing moments was seeing the awful pictures that accompanied our 2010 chapter about Brandi’s, the little hot dog stand that’s only open 25 hours a week. Rocco’s Pub, Marietta GA (CLOSED)

We’ve written many times before that we’d rather not linger on negative reviews, and if we visit a joint that’s just pretty good but otherwise uninspiring, we’d just as soon not spend the energy and time on it. But Rocco’s Pub is an unusual case. This is a joint that was once very good indeed, and took a sharp right turn into mediocrity around the time that we started blogging, and is now, perhaps, bobbing above the quality line again. Continue reading “Rocco’s Pub, Marietta GA (CLOSED)”

Ye Olde Christmas and Candy Shoppe, Marietta GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing an article about the endless search for vanilla fudge, I mean about finding a candy store called Ye Olde Christmas And Candy Shoppe. It has been around for just over a year, having celebrated its anniversary in April, and since today is apparently National Fudge Day, it’s a great time to write about it.
