Sometimes, word of mouth is still much stronger than social media. For example, one of my co-workers also has a part time job at Jeni’s Ice Creams. We all love this particular co-worker, well, for lots of reasons, but one of them is that every so often, she’ll bring in a few pints and leave them in the freezer with a note on a break room table inviting us to indulge. Oh, that Banana French Toast. My, my. Continue reading “Star Provisions, Atlanta GA”

Montagu’s, Florence AL (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about twin restaurants in Alabama: Montagu’s and its older sister Frostbite. We visited as a part of Florence Restaurant Week, using a gift card that the restaurant had given to our hosts, Florence Main Street; I like sandwiches and the girlchild is passionate about froyo, so the pair became an obvious choice. These were the fourth and fifth participating restaurants that we visited. Continue reading “Montagu’s, Florence AL (CLOSED)”
Poplar South Deli & Grille, Florence AL (CLOSED)
Okay, so everybody’s toddler says hilarious things. But ours really impressed us as we drove into downtown Florence. We crossed the Tennessee River via the completely terrific and beautiful O’Neal Bridge and went looking for the offices of Florence Main Street. This organization had invited us to spend the weekend in their good city to kick off Florence Restaurant Week, as I’m sure all y’all who follow us on Facebook and Twitter already know, and treated us to four meals in the city. Baldinos Giant Jersey Subs, Doraville GA
I’ve known for ages that there’s a second Baldinos in the Atlanta area, but I think I’ve got a pretty good reason for never stopping in before now. It’s my favorite place to get a big sandwich, and I eat at the one about five miles south of our house fairly often, as these things go, and didn’t really think it worth the mileage to ever drive all the way over to Buford Highway for something that we can get at home. Continue reading “Baldinos Giant Jersey Subs, Doraville GA”
Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about Everyday Organic, a restaurant in Greenville that is, sadly, much too far away. I really enjoyed my meal there and would have very much liked to try more of their offerings. Continue reading “Everyday Organic, Greenville SC (CLOSED)”
Sugar -n- Spice Drive-In, Spartanburg SC
Around the beginning of every year, Marie and I take a day trip to the Palmetto State. This was our fourth year doing this, and we decided to stick around the I-85 corridor this time around, and enjoy some good eating before and after a visit to Greenville’s Children’s Museum of the Upstate, about which a little more on Friday. Continue reading “Sugar -n- Spice Drive-In, Spartanburg SC”
The Sheik, Jacksonville FL
In the 1960s, as fast food really began to take off, every business owner was looking for an angle. In Jacksonville, a fellow named Tarzan Akel came up with a winking little way to get attention. Several of the area’s delis had been building sandwiches in pita bread for a few years, looking to win the attention of the city’s large Arabic population, and he decided to go full-bore into middle eastern imagery. In 1965, he opened the first of what would be a six-store chain called The Sheik, specializing in a pita sandwich filled with ham, salami, bologna, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion, along with a special sauce. It’s called a camel rider. Continue reading “The Sheik, Jacksonville FL”
