Betty Bombers, Savannah GA

Last month, we went back down to south Georgia for a few days and, as we like to stop for a meal in Savannah, we left very early and made it to Betty Bombers on Bull Street for lunch. It’s a fabulous little room in the American Legion Hall, which is completely gorgeous. It was built in 1913 and served as the home of the Chatham Artillery for some decades. Yalla! and Fred’s Meat and Bread, Krog Street Market, Atlanta GA

Since opening several months ago, the Krog Street Market has caught the imagination of many writers in our hobby. While not at all identical, it’s a similar set-up to the long-established Sweet Auburn Curb Market, offering stall spaces, and, in a couple of cases, full table service opportunities to local chefs with neat ideas. One of Ford Fry’s concepts, Superica, has a packed patio, The Cockentrice has been getting rave reviews, Gu’s Dumplings is providing temporary relief for people who are still bereft that the Bistro on Buford Highway closed and hasn’t yet formally announced its relocation, and Craft Izakaya is also drawing in crowds and mobs. Pouch, Athens GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about baked goods – one savory, one sweet.

I had taken my boy for a day out in Athens. We had fun picking strawberries together, and wearing out the boy in the always delightful “World of Wonder Playground” in Southeast Clarke Park, working up quite an appetite in the process. We then went downtown to get some lunch. Continue reading “Pouch, Athens GA”

Big Al’s Gourmet Butter Burgers, Atlanta GA

My friend David works a mile and a bit south of a burger place called Big Al’s, which opened at the beginning of the year, and told me that it’s so popular at his work that nobody’s having lunch anywhere else lately. One Friday in April, I figured that he’d sold me and met him at the space, which is on the ground floor of a parking-crunched two-story retail center on Peachtree, along with a Firehouse Subs and a CamiCakes. Pijiu Belly, Atlanta GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Pijiu Belly, a pub-type Korean-American fusion restaurant with some really interesting blends on the menu. I went with some foodie friends to have an evening there and we all had a blast. I’d had some worries that I might have to pull out but made it, and I’m glad; it was one of the most cheerful evenings I’ve had in a while. Continue reading “Pijiu Belly, Atlanta GA”

Union Hill Kitchen, Chamblee GA

Back in April, Marie and I, along with the then-three year-old, went looking to get into trouble with Sandy from Bella Vivere, and decided that maybe just going out to eat would be more sensible than starting a riot or something. She suggested Union Hill Kitchen, and we met there for a rather good dinner. Continue reading “Union Hill Kitchen, Chamblee GA”

Saltwood, Atlanta GA

A few weeks ago, Marie and I were invited to visit Saltwood, a new restaurant in the Loews Atlanta hotel in midtown. It opened in early April, replacing a popular lunch place called Eleven, and it’s led by Executive Chef Olivier Gaupin and Sous Chef Chris Español, who stopped by to say hello and tell us a bit about the menu. The concept here is small plates and charcuterie, with local meats, cheeses, and seasonal vegetables. Marie and I had a pretty good time. Continue reading “Saltwood, Atlanta GA”
