Photo Post 3: Columbus GA (part two)

In the previous photo post, I shared some pictures of some places in Columbus that I had planned to visit before I made the drive. I had hoped to see some other places that called out to be seen, but my friends in the city were either out of town or busy. Fortunately, I thought to make a pit stop at the Georgia Welcome Center, which is off exit 12 of I-185. I explained what I was after to an extremely helpful Columbus native named Helen, who grabbed a map and a pen and told me about all sorts of places that I could try, and I was happy to spend a little time looking for a few of them. I really appreciate her suggestions, which will carry over into tomorrow’s chapter, and was reminded that welcome center staff are there to help. We should do a better job taking advantage of their skills! Continue reading “Photo Post 3: Columbus GA (part two)”

Photo Post 2: Columbus GA (part one)

For ages, I’d been hoping to find time to schedule a trip down to Columbus to visit a barbecue place I had heard about. I finally did, and there will be a report on that and a couple of other places where I ate in two days. But first, here are some pictures that I took along the way. Charlie Joseph’s, LaGrange GA

In Alabama, specifically in Birmingham, there is of course a long tradition of hot dog joints started in the early 20th Century by Greek immigrants, and often today run by their descendants. The Southern Foodways Alliance made a fun little thirteen-minute documentary called Hot Dog-opolis that you can watch on Vimeo about this small addition to the overall culture of food in the southeast. Photo Post 1: Newnan, GA

This is the first of four posts this week in which I’m going to let the pictures do almost all of the talking. This isn’t a format change, just an opportunity to do things a little different once in a while, and show off some finds outside of our traditional standards of “article about a restaurant with two photos.” Continue reading “Photo Post 1: Newnan, GA”

The Crab Trap, Saint Simons Island GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about the Crab Trap, a place in my home town of St. Simons that I’ve only visited two or three times. It may seem ridiculous to our readers (it certainly does to Grant) that I would go home to an island and then not eat any seafood, but my mother is an excellent cook and my father and I have certain habits that have gotten very comfortable. It is a little hard for me to be pried out of those well-beaten paths and into a new restaurant. Continue reading “The Crab Trap, Saint Simons Island GA”

Gabriel’s Desserts, Marietta GA

While Marie and the kids were out of town, I went to try a newly-opened pizza place in Kennesaw. It was awful.

Friday night, well, that was quite fractious. I had a pair of possible plans. One of them required for some long overdue money to appear in my mailbox. If it did, I was going to treat myself to another long drive and an overnight stay somewhere. Since it did not, I just made a day trip out of it on Saturday. Rather than planning anything, I decided to just settle in Friday night with a book and eat somewhere in Marietta whenever I got hungry. This proved, eventually, to be Dave Poe’s BBQ on Whitlock, where I had a really decent supper. Continue reading “Gabriel’s Desserts, Marietta GA”

Quõc Húóng, Doraville GA

Since our visit to Buford Highway last month to sample pho and bánh mì sandwiches, I’ve been looking forward to returning to Lee’s Bakery for another, but I’ve also wanted to have one from another restaurant. Chow Down Atlanta’s guide (link dead) suggested that there could be as many as four more places that assemble a better bánh mì than Lee’s. So I decided to visit the restaurant that is number one on her list, a small place in the Asian Square strip mall called Quốc Húóng. It is closed on Thursdays, which is the usual day that I go out and play for lunch by myself, but two weeks ago, Marie and the kids went down to Saint Simons Island while I stayed in town to work some extra hours. This gave me the chance to go visit on a Friday. Continue reading “Quõc Húóng, Doraville GA”
