I started craving some of the interesting barbecue from Atlanta’s western side that I’ve mentioned in these pages before. This is the barbecue served with what’s called either Hudson’s-style sauce, or juice by its fans, and longtime readers may know all too well that I’ve preached its unique style many times before. What I haven’t done, however, is attempt to provide photographs of what the heck I’m talking about, relying instead on descriptions. So one Friday last month, Marie and I had a day off and decided to give the girlchild a little attention and quality time. We left the baby in daycare and took the teenager out to Austell for lunch at Wallace Barbecue. We covered this restaurant in 2010, but I don’t believe that we did a good job. I certainly no longer advise ordering the meat dry. In order to best experience Hudson’s-style sauce, you need to just get a pork and stew plate as it comes. Pollo Tropical, Kennesaw GA
Hello again, readers! Did you miss us? We had a good vacation down in south Georgia. This was not really a big eating tour, but we have a handful of chapters to share, but that won’t be for a while yet. We are still working through the remarkable backlog of stories from June. We’ll try to tell you about the couple of old places in Savannah and Brunswick that we saw sometime before the stores start selling Halloween candy. Definitely before they discount it. Rocco’s Pub, Marietta GA (CLOSED)
We’ve written many times before that we’d rather not linger on negative reviews, and if we visit a joint that’s just pretty good but otherwise uninspiring, we’d just as soon not spend the energy and time on it. But Rocco’s Pub is an unusual case. This is a joint that was once very good indeed, and took a sharp right turn into mediocrity around the time that we started blogging, and is now, perhaps, bobbing above the quality line again. Continue reading “Rocco’s Pub, Marietta GA (CLOSED)”
Ming’s B.B.Q., Doraville GA
This is Marie, contributing a second-glance take on Ming’s. We were with the kids and with our fellow bloggers from Spatialdrift, Emily and Adam. They are getting progressively closer to 285 in their quest to eat their way up Buford Highway, and we intended to come with them to their next restaurant. After a brief detour in a place that keeps food unrefrigerated on a counter and therefore got ruled out, we wound up at Ming’s. Grant had visited the Duluth store before to eat lunch with Sandy from Bella Vivere and had taken the kids with him, so that left only 50% of the party going for the first time. Ye Olde Christmas and Candy Shoppe, Marietta GA (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about the endless search for vanilla fudge, I mean about finding a candy store called Ye Olde Christmas And Candy Shoppe. It has been around for just over a year, having celebrated its anniversary in April, and since today is apparently National Fudge Day, it’s a great time to write about it. Continue reading “Ye Olde Christmas and Candy Shoppe, Marietta GA (CLOSED)”
Pisano’s NY Style Pizzeria, Kennesaw GA
In August of last year, a reader let us know about a new family-owned pizza place that opened in downtown Kennesaw. Brothers Pizza moved into the site that had been the home of My Country Kitchen for a really impressive run of 35 years. It shuttered in December 2011 and the building was soon under reconstruction to make it a pizza joint. The business remained active for only four months before a change in the ownership group led to some new tweaking and a revised menu. As Pisano’s, it reopened in January of this year. Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Atlanta GA
Late last month, we were very pleased to be invited for a truly nice meal at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse along with several other local media types. Amusing myself, the first draft of this little story featured a little playful teasing that not as many active bloggers were present as there should be. After all, magazines get thrown out while blogs are forever, I said, knowing full well that wasn’t true as I typed it. Then I went and picked a fight with Roadfood.com about deleting pages off their site. I may be a playful tease, but there’s being silly and there’s opening yourself up for having some editor of some glossy magazine clear his throat about how I obviously know darn well that the internet’s every bit as ephemeral as the dead tree format and to hush my loud mouth.
