Last month, the local chef Asha Gomez closed her celebrated restaurant Cardamom Hill, in part because the space was too small to seat all of the people who wished to eat there. I have never once heard of a barbecue place having that problem. In many famous places, the line and the parking issues are part and parcel of visiting, which is how President Obama was able to get all sorts of column inches in the papers by cutting in line at Franklin Barbecue in Austin TX – and by buying lunch for everybody whom he delayed, which was good of him – but that doesn’t mean that Marie and I ever want to deal with it with our impatient three year-old in tow. Or subject everybody in line with us to our impatient three year-old! Continue reading “Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q, Atlanta GA (take two)”

Papa Joe’s BBQ Pit, Decatur GA (CLOSED)
On July 4th, I wanted barbecue, and so did everybody else in this and probably every town. In the mid-afternoon, Fox Brothers tweeted that their wait for carry-out orders was two hours long. I decided to visit one of Atlanta’s less heralded and hyped barbecue joints, where the wait might not be endless. Joe and Christine Parks opened Papa Joe’s in 2012 with their son, Joe Jr., after five years of success on the tournament circuit, but they certainly had themselves a good crowd as well. Ol’ Tymer’s BBQ & Blues, Fort Payne AL
I’m not going to suggest that there’s a Fort Payne barbecue rivalry anywhere near as explosive as the one in Georgia between adherents of Fresh Air and fans of Old Clinton can get. However, anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that, for the last twenty years or so, you either go to Bar-B-Q Place, which we visited in 2011, or you go to Ol’ Tymer’s. 50 Taters, Scottsboro AL
We wanted to sample a couple of barbecue places while we were in northeast Alabama, and so when we finished shopping at the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, we made our way to the downtown area around the courthouse square, and saw a closed-up storefront where the restaurant we were looking to find was supposed to be. We’ll chalk this up to really poor research on my part and some outdated listings on Urbanspoon. 50 Taters closed their downtown location in late 2011 and moved out to the big highway – there’s a Sprawl-Mart access road alongside US-72 that gets all the traffic – and actually has opened an additional store up on Sand Mountain in Rainsville where they now do the smoking for each location. I think that we’ve got everything sorted and corrected now, so anybody else looking for barbecue in this corner of Alabama should have an easier time getting to where they need to be. Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Atlanta GA
Today’s entry is going to be a short one because, for the first time ever, and hopefully the last, I deleted the final-and-only draft of the darn thing. Continue reading “Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Atlanta GA”
The Greater Good BBQ, Atlanta GA
Regular readers might have noticed that over the last month or so, I’ve been sampling all the barbecue joints around Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood that we have never featured before. Last of these is the second home for The Greater Good, whose first store, in Tucker, opened in 2012. Continue reading “The Greater Good BBQ, Atlanta GA”
Old South Bar-B-Q, Smyrna GA (take two)
I miss my dad a whole lot, but a recent trip to his all-time favorite barbecue joint made me miss him even more. I missed how he would have reacted to a menu change that would have had him fuming, in his good-natured way. Continue reading “Old South Bar-B-Q, Smyrna GA (take two)”
