Community Q, criminally, had slipped under my radar. Since it opened in 2009, it received lots of attention and writeups from hobbyists and food lovers (Here’s our own report), but I hadn’t eaten there in quite some time – the last was almost two years ago, when Dale, a roadfooding friend from Rhode Island came through town on his way to Birmingham – and found myself curious to visit them again. Hudson’s Hickory House, Douglasville GA (take two)
As best I can remember, there have been three times in the last six years where I’ve had to just stop eating because the food was too spicy. The first time was our visit to Prince’s Hot Chicken in Nashville TN. The second time was when I left some chicken marinating overnight in the mustard sauce that I bought at Billy Bob’s in Carrollton GA.
Let me tell you about the third time. Continue reading “Hudson’s Hickory House, Douglasville GA (take two)”
Gumbeaux’s Cajun Cafe, Douglasville GA
Over the years, we’ve received hundreds of suggestions and ideas about places to visit around the southeast, and the runaway number one in the Atlanta area has definitely been Gumbeaux’s, a cajun-style restaurant in Douglasville. It’s in that town’s charming single-side historic downtown, with the businesses on one side and the train tracks on the other, and it’s incredibly popular. We arrived on a Saturday last month about 11.45 and may have been the last party to be seated without having to wait. Continue reading “Gumbeaux’s Cajun Cafe, Douglasville GA”
Del Frisco’s Grille, Atlanta GA
Some restaurants in Atlanta just steadfastly stay off my radar, even after I’ve read about them. I think there are just so many of them that, even enjoying this hobby, I don’t quite catch everything. That seems to be what happened with Del Frisco’s Grille, which opened in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood three years ago. It’s in a very neat location on Peachtree, with Atlanta’s only double-decker patio, facing Peachtree, kind of between Lenox Square and Capital Cities Plaza. Once upon a time, I worked for a company whose larger offices were in Capital Cities. Del Frisco’s might have been outside my everyday lunch budget, but I’m sure I would have enjoyed coming here with co-workers for an occasional treat. Gigi’s Cupcakes, Kennesaw GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about Gigi’s cupcakes. They were kind enough to invite some bloggers to check out their holiday cakes (adorable) and to do a taste test of the gluten-free varieties. We have encountered them before – I visited the original Nashville store before we began our blog, and have visited a few of the Atlanta locations more recently – but the seasonal flavors and addition of gluten-free varieties was new. As you may recall if you’ve read the last time I checked out some desserts, I did gluten-free briefly in the mid-’00s and found it a frustrating and expensive hobby; if these kinds of resources had been available at the time I might have stuck with it longer. Gypsy Kitchen, Atlanta GA (take two)
Here’s something that will (probably) never be repeated. When a media outlet or PR company invites us to sample a restaurant, I go ahead and schedule a slot for a story, just in case we want to write about it. Well, I was pretty sure that another trip to Gypsy Kitchen would warrant a story today, because Marie and I enjoy that place a great deal. I keep saying that I probably like it more than anybody else in Atlanta does. We had not been by in the last six months, when the new executive chef, Matthew Ridgway, took over, however, and I was very curious to see what changes he’d made. We only got to speak with Chef Matthew for a brief moment, but the restaurant’s chef de cuisine, Garrison Finzer, told us quite a lot about the new menu, and how the kitchen itself has had a major overhaul since the restaurant opened to – and let’s be fair – somewhat mild and mixed reviews. Masti, Atlanta GA
Marie is so unpredictable. She says that she doesn’t care for Indian food, but she really, really enjoyed the Bangladeshi cuisine at Purnima. So I thought that I found a pretty interesting possibility to please her in Masti, which opened earlier this year in Toco Hills, in the space vacated by Osteria Cibo Rustica, and advertises that it’s “fun” Indian.
