Poffertjes

This is Marie, contributing an article about a treat that is available at the Buford Farmer’s Market.

Our friends Helen and Vincent had told me that there were poffertjes there and that they would be glad to give a tour of one of their favorite stores, so of course we had to go. I’d not paid very much attention to the place before, under the mistaken impression that it was an ordinary booths-in-a-lot weekend affair. Wholly incorrect, of course. It’s actually a mini-mall, and open every day. And they have poffertjes! Continue reading “Poffertjes”

Jeanne’s House, Doraville GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing a visit to a Chinese place with a singularly unusual name.

Sometime a while ago, Grant started calling generic Mexican places “El-this-Los-that” and generic Chinese places “Happy-this-Golden-that” because honestly, how many Mexican or Chinese places in the suburbs have you gone to that DON”T use that pattern for their names? And if you go to the Golden China in the mall, isn’t that pretty much a guarantee of a choice between incandescent red glop versus opalescent whitish glop, over chicken or beef? Plus broccoli and carrots, of course. Continue reading “Jeanne’s House, Doraville GA (CLOSED)”

Copycat In-N-Out Burgers

Here’s a quick little cooking post for you guys. Neither Marie nor I have ever had the opportunity to try an In-N-Out Burger, since we’ve never been that far west, but we do read the local blog Adventurous Tastes, of course, and last month, she posted about her recent experiences playing with a copycat recipe of the restaurant’s signature double-patty burger. She found this recipe at another blog called Buns in My Oven. Continue reading “Copycat In-N-Out Burgers”

Seasons 52’s Spring Menu

This is Marie, contributing an article about the latest update to the Seasons 52 menu. We received an invitation to try out the latest dishes as a lunch rather than the blogger group visit we’d had the last few times. You may have read our articles about previous visits, and rather than a big event with several entrees presented, Grant and I had a cozy meal by ourselves. We need to do a few more just-us lunches together. It’s been remarked before that the baby has been remarkably well-behaved in restaurants, but he is still a baby – or rather, a toddler, with all that implies – so good behavior still does require a good bit of attention and pre-planning. The last visit we took to Seasons 52 on our own dime, sometime last year, was apparently on a day when his wiggles were in particularly large supply, and it wasn’t the most successful of meals. This one made up for that last visit quite well. Continue reading “Seasons 52’s Spring Menu”

Crawfish Shack, Atlanta GA (take two)

This is Marie, contributing an article about Crawfish Shack on Buford Highway. Our regular readers know that we have been diligently collecting restaurants along this stretch of road for a while, though our travels have not left us many opportunities for revisits, or for the family to go together to a place that Grant first visited on his own. But we made time for this one after our friend Leslie, who writes The Food and Me, suggested that we meet here. Continue reading “Crawfish Shack, Atlanta GA (take two)”

Alon’s Bakery, Dunwoody GA (take two)

(Every once in a while, Marie goes to a restaurant that I’d visited without her, and about which I’d written a chapter, and feels that I could have captured it a little better. Rather than revising our previous story about Alon’s, here’s a revisit.)

Dear Grant,

I had the chance to go to Alon’s and didn’t think you said all there was to say about the place. Maybe you could add just a little more, at least in the way of photos? Even if not, at least you’ll know what kind of photos my phone is capable of, so I will be able to use it instead of borrowing the camera. Continue reading “Alon’s Bakery, Dunwoody GA (take two)”

Olive Affairs, Brunswick GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Olive Affairs. But first, I need to say a little bit about how I wound up there. Grant and I were having a separate weekend, with him taking the girlchild up to Tennessee while I brought the boychild down to visit his grandparents. Originally, the plan had been to collect a restaurant in Savannah after the boy worked off some of his wiggles in the Children’s Museum there, but the trip took longer than anticipated and I realized that the timing had us getting out of Savannah on a Friday at rush hour which although not up to Atlanta standards was nevertheless a Very Bad Idea.
