It’s always interesting to visit two restaurants as determinedly different as the two locations of Cơm in Atlanta are. We had dinner with some friends at the Buford Highway location in late 2013 and really enjoyed it. It seems like a mostly traditional menu, comparable to many of the other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, and they serve a shaking chicken dish that Marie still considers one of, if not the outright best, of any meal she’s had at any Buford Highway restaurant. The Garden at Community Smith, Atlanta GA
You may have noticed that we’re more likely to visit and write about a fifty year-old barbecue shack a hundred miles from anywhere than we are to sip cocktails at a nice patio in a major metropolis, but one doesn’t like to turn down invitations to mixers, and so a couple of weeks ago, I joined a few other local writers for a meet-and-greet at the absolutely beautiful Garden at Community Smith, located atop the Renaissance Hotel on West Peachtree in midtown. The Rotisserie Shop, Kennesaw GA
It’s been on our short list for ages and ages, and we finally went over to try The Rotisserie Shop, which opened two years ago in the space formerly occupied by a pizza place we liked, My Cousin Vinny’s. Owned by Carla Geniso and Chris Malfitano, it originally opened in the spring of 2013 as a casual place that mainly did carryout, but it was reformulated into a nicer, sit-down place with low lighting the following year. Soho, Vinings GA (take two)
About three years ago, we wrote about Soho, among the best options for fine dining in Cobb County, and the jewel of the Vinings Jubilee development for close to twenty years now. At the time, Joe Ahn was the executive chef. He’s been succeeded by Scott Warren, who’s been continuing to serve Soho’s most popular dishes while also bringing a few things of his own to the table. Food 101, Sandy Springs GA (take two)
I get the impression that Food 101 is overlooked by an army of potential guests who will fall in love with the place once they try it. We visited a couple of years ago, at the launch of their Barrel Bar, and mentioned then that the restaurant, led by Chef Justin Keith, was pretty far ahead of the “new Southern” curve, anticipating the rise of the cocktails-in-mason-jars craze by a couple of years. It’s a place that should be celebrated and talked about a lot more than it is, particularly with some treats as terrific as what they are offering on their Spring menu. Kabob Land, Atlanta GA
I love it whenever I get to visit a restaurant and have a preconceived notion dropped on its head. A few weeks ago, I was invited to sample a lunch at Kabob Land, which is in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, on Piedmont just below its intersection with Peachtree. I looked forward to visiting, but I think that the colorful, Saturday-morning-cartoon logo that the restaurant employs actually hides just how good the food is. I always try to visit every restaurant that we try with an open mind and a kind heart, but wacky lettering sort of gets in the way of seriously good food. Continue reading “Kabob Land, Atlanta GA”
Ameer’s Mediterranean Grill, Atlanta GA
A few weeks ago, we got together with Emily and Adam from Spatialdrift and enjoyed a really good supper at Ameer’s Mediterranean Grill. It’s in the center of a small strip mall on Briarcliff near Lavista, right next to Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ. It’s been on my radar for a few months, as JustJan from Staycation Atlanta recommended it to us, so when Emily tossed it up as an idea, I grabbed it.
