I love it whenever I get to visit a restaurant and have a preconceived notion dropped on its head. A few weeks ago, I was invited to sample a lunch at Kabob Land, which is in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, on Piedmont just below its intersection with Peachtree. I looked forward to visiting, but I think that the colorful, Saturday-morning-cartoon logo that the restaurant employs actually hides just how good the food is. I always try to visit every restaurant that we try with an open mind and a kind heart, but wacky lettering sort of gets in the way of seriously good food. Continue reading “Kabob Land, Atlanta GA”

Ameer’s Mediterranean Grill, Atlanta GA
A few weeks ago, we got together with Emily and Adam from Spatialdrift and enjoyed a really good supper at Ameer’s Mediterranean Grill. It’s in the center of a small strip mall on Briarcliff near Lavista, right next to Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ. It’s been on my radar for a few months, as JustJan from Staycation Atlanta recommended it to us, so when Emily tossed it up as an idea, I grabbed it. Cafe Sababa, Dunwoody GA
It was another one of those Friday evenings where I could have stayed home and not dealt with traffic any more, but the 5:00 news report on the northbound drive was grim and Marie has a worse commute than I do every day anyway, so I told her to stay put, and we’d come pick her up for supper. I mentioned to the girlchild that I was thinking about a Mediterranean restaurant and she balked at going out. Continue reading “Cafe Sababa, Dunwoody GA”
Jerusalem Bakery, Marietta GA
A few Sundays back, Marie and the three year-old and I joined Marilyn from Atlanta etc. for a quite nice little vegetarian supper at a surprisingly old and venerable restaurant. Jerusalem Bakery opened in 1973 and while I’m not certain whether they’ve been in this location the entire time, neither were two of the employees that I asked. It is in the same strip mall as Tasty China, at the intersection of Franklin Road and the South Loop, although not a couple of doors down like I thought it was (sorry, Marilyn), but rather behind and beneath Tasty China. There’s a whole ‘nuther plaza of shops around back, invisible from the South Loop. Continue reading “Jerusalem Bakery, Marietta GA”
Grecian Gyro, Dunwoody GA
As soon as I realized that one of the five Grecian Gyro locations was just one exit away from Marie’s work, I schemed to get over there and have supper. Every once in a while, I like to go pick her up from work and spare her the awful, lonely, Friday evening commute home. She certainly seems pleased to have me and, often, at least one of the children pull up to give her the break. Unfortunately, on this instance, the toddler fell asleep on the way to Dunwoody. We had a bad feeling that he was going to be a Mr. Crankypants when he woke, and we were right. Continue reading “Grecian Gyro, Dunwoody GA”
Hours and Hours in Hapeville
Marie’s mother was coming to visit. One of her friends on Saint Simons Island was coming to Atlanta to address the Rotarians or the Rosicrucians or the Romulans or somebody at an airport hotel, and she caught a ride. I volunteered to go pick her up, since, downtown, I’m closer to the airport than Marie is. Plus, there was a restaurant in Hapeville that I had been wanting to try. Persepolis, Sandy Springs GA
I dropped my friend Lakshmi, who writes The Rich Vegetarian, a line and asked whether she’d like to get some grub and talk shop. She suggested that we meet up at Persepolis, a restaurant north of the perimeter on Roswell Road that’s just about the living definition of venerable. It opened in 1996, but feels like it’s been here forever. We arrived as they were opening, and, anticipating that we were going to try their popular lunch buffet, they left us alone for a little while to consider their impressive, nicely-designed interior, the upscale effect of which, it must be said, is slightly dented by the presence of the flatscreen TV playing ESPN News.
