Tom + Chee, Kennesaw GA
Here’s a very nifty surprise. Since the small chain Tom + Chee exploded in a big expansion over the last twelve months, they’ve become what is probably the only place in Georgia to serve goetta. Have you ever heard of this stuff? It’s kind of the Ohio River Valley equivalent to Mississippi slugburgers: breakfast sausage that has been “extended” with the addition of oats and onions, and seasoned with rosemary and bay leaves. Goldberg’s Bagel Company and Deli, Atlanta GA
I’ve eaten at the Goldberg’s on West Paces a few times over the years, even knowing – as I learned in 2012 – that their potato salad could well be my undoing. This is one of six locations around Atlanta, plus at least three inside Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and until the other night, it had been the only one that I visited. Earlier this month, the Association of Food Bloggers arranged a media dinner at the small chain’s original location on Roswell Road, near Wieuca, which I had never visited before. In a really neat twist, it turns out that this strip mall has been the launching pad for two highly-regarded Atlanta-based chains. The World Famous, Athens GA
One weekend in May, Marie’s mother flew into town for a visit. This coincided with Marie’s desire to take the three year-old out someplace to pick strawberries. Boy, howdy, did this ever turn out well for all concerned. We went to Washington Farms, near Watkinsville, and brought back two gallons, many of which Marie transformed into the most remarkably good strawberry jam that anybody’s ever had. Sometimes, word of mouth is still much stronger than social media. For example, one of my co-workers also has a part time job at Jeni’s Ice Creams. We all love this particular co-worker, well, for lots of reasons, but one of them is that every so often, she’ll bring in a few pints and leave them in the freezer with a note on a break room table inviting us to indulge. Montagu’s, Florence AL (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing an article about twin restaurants in Alabama: Montagu’s and its older sister Frostbite. We visited as a part of Florence Restaurant Week, using a gift card that the restaurant had given to our hosts, Florence Main Street; I like sandwiches and the girlchild is passionate about froyo, so the pair became an obvious choice. Poplar South Deli & Grille, Florence AL (CLOSED)
Okay, so everybody’s toddler says hilarious things. But ours really impressed us as we drove into downtown Florence. We crossed the Tennessee River via the completely terrific and beautiful O’Neal Bridge and went looking for the offices of Florence Main Street. This organization had invited us to spend the weekend in their good city to kick off Florence Restaurant Week, as I’m sure all y’all who follow us on Facebook and Twitter already know, and treated us to four meals in the city.
