Kumquat Mae, Athens GA (CLOSED)

Kumquat Mae has one of the most curious histories of any restaurant that we’ve ever visited. It has closed and reopened several times in different towns, not from lack of business, but because Trae Stewart has always put family first, and has closed the restaurant and bakery to devote time to her children. The current location of the restaurant is at least the fourth since 1995, but it’s only been in business for maybe half of that time. Continue reading “Kumquat Mae, Athens GA (CLOSED)”

Tea and Chocolate in Athens GA

This is Marie, contributing an article that is, as is my habit, mainly about desserts. As my age increases and my waistline decides that it’s worked hard and long enough and mid-40’s is a good time to give in, these treats have to be slightly less frequent and a good deal less voluminous. Therefore it’s really important that they be superb, don’t you see! I can’t eat an entire bag of Hershey’s Kisses without serious consequences, nor do I actually particularly want to any more. Zeb’s Bar-B-Q, Danielsville GA (take two)

Sometimes, I look back at the earliest days of our blog and it feels like somebody else’s work entirely. When we last visited the mighty Zeb’s Bar-B-Q in May of 2010, we never ate barbecue twice in a day. I think eight in a day might be our record now. Smokebelly BBQ, Atlanta GA

Smokebelly BBQ opened about eighteen months ago. It’s on East Andrews in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, and it immediately raised eyebrows among a couple of our peers when it boasted of “Chef-Crafted Q.” It’s part of that recent wave of restaurants that are owned by a group and figured that they could let some executive chef types have some fun with barbecue in a relaxed setting, probably with bourbon. No, this is a million miles away from the sort of middle-of-nowhere, decades-old, family-run place that we enjoy the most – and come back tomorrow for a story about one of our favorites – but I’d honestly prefer a business not try to fake authenticity. If they want to do barbecue, probably with bourbon, I’m happy to enjoy their offerings on their own merits instead of judging them against old places. Continue reading “Smokebelly BBQ, Atlanta GA”

The New Kitchen at Christophe’s To Go

This is Marie, contributing an article about Christophe’s To Go. We were invited to a dinner to showcase Christophe’s and Red Hare Brewing, who had teamed up for a blogger night at the kitchens, but unfortunately Grant was not able to attend with me; he enjoys Red Hare and would have liked the meals that we sampled! Continue reading “The New Kitchen at Christophe’s To Go”

Smoky Chipotle Vegetarian Skillet Meal

This is Marie, contributing a recipe that the girlchild specifically requested, then declined to eat because she somehow failed to notice that it had tofu in it, despite the photo including obvious cubes. She can’t have mistaken them for chicken, as she was specifically offering the recipe for Meatless Monday. She also declared the chipotles disgusting. Ah well, Grant and I liked it! Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub, Brookhaven GA (take two)

Marie and I were invited to revisit Kaleidoscope a few weeks ago to sample their new wood-fired pizzas. I confess that I raised an eyebrow when the restaurant first announced that they were adding pizzas to their lineup, but each time we’ve gone to Kaleidoscope, it has been to have their truly amazing burger, which is among the very best in the Atlanta area (Hat tip to Todd Brock for originally sending us in to try one, by the way). I genuinely have not looked at anything else on the restaurant’s menu, as the burger is that good. It took an unusual circumstance to get me to waver from my routine!
