Taquería la Oaxaqueña, Jonesboro GA
One day in late 2003, our friend David phoned me about a promising restaurant near us. He had read in Creative Loafing – just like you can – that this place, then called Cafeteria la Oaxaqueña, was serving a unique treat called a tlayuda. A common street food in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, it is sometimes called a Mexican pizza, not entirely correctly, and served as the inspiration for the tostadas that you see on fast food menus today. A couple of months ago, I spent two hours on a Sunday morning driving around some well-worn corridors in Cobb County, taking some photos for Not Fooling Anybody – all of you should do that – and I was reminded that I had been intending to come by on a Sunday and get some more pics of Dupsie’s, a clothing store on South Cobb that had once been a Shrimp Boats. Heirloom Cafe and Fresh Market, Athens GA
Readers have been telling us for ages that we need to try Heirloom Cafe, a farm-to-table place on Chase Street in Athens. We finally made it over there on our trip to the Classic City before Christmas. I didn’t realize that the restaurant had moved into a long-closed Amoco gas station. Mr. D’s, Henderson KY
In the previous chapter, I mentioned that some amazingly good fried chicken originally brought me to the Henderson area. That’s no longer available, although the rights to the old Bon Ton recipe can be purchased or leased for a price. Our friend Louis Hatchett was very clear that while nobody’s fried chicken was quite like the Bon Ton’s, there was some pretty good stuff available at a drive-in called Mr. D’s. Photo Post 20: Repurposed Shrimp Boats in Florida
A couple of years ago, one of our readers let us know that there had been a Shrimp Boats restaurant on US-19 in Florida, on the stretch north of Tampa between the towns of Hollywood and Tarpon Springs. Well, I said, that sounds like a stretch of a road that we will never visit. Well, never say never, because, as you’ll see in the next chapter, we went to visit Tarpon Springs, and so I looked up that business. It’s currently the home of Sunray Auto Sales, and the somewhat bemused proprietors did not object to me wandering around their property taking pictures.
