When people talk about the best children’s museums in the country, there are three cities among the hundred eighty-odd that are on everybody’s top ten lists: Indianapolis, Boston, and Columbia. EdVenture is only ten years old, but it has an amazing reputation. It is huge and sprawling and has indoor and outdoor exhibits and I have been wanting to take the baby for several months. I had decided that we’d go in February, because we always end up in South Carolina in February, and was really looking forward to finally seeing this place. It did not disappoint. Jackie Hite’s BBQ, Batesburg-Leesville SC
Back in the fall, when I circumnavigated South Carolina, the road took me through the small twin towns of Batesburg and Leesville, which are home to a pair of celebrated and famous barbecue shacks. (In case you didn’t read that awesome adventure, start here.) I knew before I started that I would only visit one of the two, so I flipped a coin and settled on Shealy’s, which turned out to be the better known and larger restaurant. I enjoyed Shealy’s a good deal, and as I read about their friendly rival, Jackie Hite’s, I knew that I’d have to make a return visit. Continue reading “Jackie Hite’s BBQ, Batesburg-Leesville SC”
Tijuana’s Taco-Mex, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)
The southern end of Buford Highway does not get as much attention as the areas closer to the perimeter. Perhaps most neglected is a stretch between North Druid Hills and Clairmont that looks, at first glance, to be entirely either residential apartments or home to several national fast food chains. But several of the larger chains have moved out and smaller businesses, catering to Spanish-speaking customers, have taken their place. For example, there’s this 24-hour tacqueria that has set up shop in what looks like it was originally a Captain D’s. Continue reading “Tijuana’s Taco-Mex, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)”
Kutztown Soda Works of Pennsylvania
One of the highlights of our trip to Ohio in December was our visit to Jungle Jim’s, the gigantic grocery store – slash – tourist mecca in the Cincinnati suburbs. There, we spent a good deal of vacation money in their soda aisle – sorry, their “pop” aisle – bringing back a few old favorites and getting several new things to sample. Jack’s Old South BBQ, Braselton GA
Since, apart from a curiosity about Iron Chef that lasted about two weeks, I have no interest in competition cooking television shows, I had never heard of Myron Mixon and his appearances on a program called BBQ Pitmasters until some bloggers who I read started talking about him some years after his first TV win. Where’s the Best BBQ? was the first to mention his restaurant in Braselton. (Unfortunately, Scot’s site has since closed.) Continue reading “Jack’s Old South BBQ, Braselton GA”
Photo Post 7: The Leopard Drive Inn, Homer GA
Earlier this month, I took my daughter up to the Commerce / Banks Crossing outlet malls to shop, and from there, we motored up the road to the town of Homer to pick up some sodas from a store that I had read about. Along the way, we passed by this very old fast food joint and I stopped on the way back to take a few pictures of it. I’d have bought a milkshake, but astonishingly, despite this place virtually screaming “soft serve,” they don’t actually have ice cream here. Big Oak Bar-B-Q, Commerce GA
Here’s a curious turn of events. Earlier this month, I intended to stop by some barbecue place, forgot what it was, and settled for something else instead. In the end, it really didn’t matter – if it’s a place that we’ve never been, then I want to visit, simple as that – but there’s the downside of being scatterbrained and having too many facts to store in your skull. The place that I had originally wanted to stop was Cabin Creek in Nicholson, but that’ll have to wait until the next time. This visit saw us stopping by Big Oak, just outside of Commerce.
