One evening last month, while the girlchild was busy with football and friends, Marie and I took a badly overstimulated baby over to Austell to strike another Atlanta-area barbecue joint off our to-do list. The little fellow fell asleep in the car, exhausted after an afternoon spent refusing to nap, and so he missed all the deterioration and sprawl of the southern part of the county. After crossing the East-West Connector, Austell Road takes drivers through some really ugly dilapidation. I’ve always had a soft spot for South Cobb High School because I like the way their stadium is backed right up to and above the street, but all this blight around it and Clay Road is unfortunate. The Red-Eyed Mule, Marietta GA (take two)
Please don’t look around in our archives for our original story about The Red-Eyed Mule. It was written before we actually started the blog in any formal, branded sense, and was one of a handful of entries – probably the first six or seven, I suppose – that was scripted as a regular entry on my old Livejournal. As our first story, it is an interesting archaeological curio, but not a particularly auspicious launch to our hobby. Continue reading “The Red-Eyed Mule, Marietta GA (take two)”
Loribell’s Frozen Custard Creations, Kennesaw GA
Urbanspoon sent us north up US-41 for dessert one Friday last month. The baby had been sick for a couple of days, and since he was finally feeling good enough to go back to school, Marie and I got out of the house for some grown-up time. Since frozen custard is still somewhat uncommon in the south (Sheridan’s, one of the few custard chains to try a foothold in Georgia, closed their lone store in Tucker last year), I was curious to try this place. It’s in the “Make Way for the Wal-Mart” sprawl north of Kennesaw and slightly south of Acworth, and it’s an incredibly surprising and fun little treat. Bell’s Hamburgers, Toccoa GA
One Friday last summer, I drove through Toccoa on a food-packed road trip through northeast Georgia to Clemson and back, and spotted a terrific old sign for a place called Bell’s. I photographed the sign for posterity and readers let me know, through comments and e-mails, what a mistake I made in not stopping for their fried chicken. Then I uncovered the existence of those two Maryland Fried stores in town and knew that I had to get back one day. As it turned out, we got to compare the two. Maryland Fried Chicken, Toccoa GA
Here’s a conundrum. How best to explain an experience where the food was really quite good, served well and in a great little environment, but still left me just glum with disappointment? This might make more sense to readers who have been following us for a while, and know that I get a huge kick out of glorious old retro signs and well-maintained old buildings from the middle of the last century. That’s what sent me up the road to Toccoa: not the promise of good food, but the promise of a great chance to take some fun pictures. Continue reading “Maryland Fried Chicken, Toccoa GA”
Scott & BJ’s Bar-B-Q, Athens GA
Years ago, in some of the earliest chapters at this blog that mentioned barbecue around Athens, I lamented the closure of Carither’s, a very good restaurant that had been in an old red brick building on Milledge, near the old Bi-Lo and the bypass. I found it probably in 1995 and ate there off and on for the next decade. I was not the only one. The legendary ABC sportscaster Keith Jackson once called it the best he’d ever had. Em’s Kitchen, Athens GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about breakfast in Athens. I’d first run across a mention of Em’s Kitchen on one of my favorite mommy blogs, the wonderfully eclectic My So-Called Mommy Life, from a post way back in the spring. Sadly, we go to Athens far less often than I’d like, and we didn’t get around to trying the place out until now. It is a breakfast and lunch place which does brunch on the weekends.
