Pizza 3.14, Marietta GA (CLOSED)

This is Marie, contributing a small article about a local pizza joint we tried out. No one enjoyed the visit more than the baby did, because they have an arcade with a game that shows trucks jumping Monster-Truck-style over unlikely bits of terrain, and the game had a wheel and lever and buttons. He did not care in the least that all he got to see was the teaser footage; for him, it was an unending free video game. Continue reading “Pizza 3.14, Marietta GA (CLOSED)”

Photo Post 8: The Sno-Cap at Sunset

Slightly omitted from the previous chapter was the reality that this trip to Columbia was not a complete success at all, especially on the wallet. The previous day, I had my tires rotated, and I then celebrated our arrival at the children’s museum by mounting the curb and blowing one of them. At first, I would have said that Columbia’s not a good city to be looking for obscure tires for a weird little Mazda on a Saturday afternoon, but then I got home and looked up my tires and learned that I was lucky to find one at all. Even the big Kaufmann Tires chain has only three in all of Georgia. Anyway, I drove around and around. Businesses started closing and I was hobbling around on the spare doughnut going from store to store looking for something to use. It took two and a half hours to find the tire, then I collected Marie and the baby, and hit the three restaurants that we wanted to see. Continue reading “Photo Post 8: The Sno-Cap at Sunset”

Tijuana’s Taco-Mex, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)

The southern end of Buford Highway does not get as much attention as the areas closer to the perimeter. Perhaps most neglected is a stretch between North Druid Hills and Clairmont that looks, at first glance, to be entirely either residential apartments or home to several national fast food chains. But several of the larger chains have moved out and smaller businesses, catering to Spanish-speaking customers, have taken their place. For example, there’s this 24-hour tacqueria that has set up shop in what looks like it was originally a Captain D’s. Continue reading “Tijuana’s Taco-Mex, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)”

Jack’s Old South BBQ, Braselton GA

Since, apart from a curiosity about Iron Chef that lasted about two weeks, I have no interest in competition cooking television shows, I had never heard of Myron Mixon and his appearances on a program called BBQ Pitmasters until some bloggers who I read started talking about him some years after his first TV win. Where’s the Best BBQ? was the first to mention his restaurant in Braselton. (Unfortunately, Scot’s site has since closed.) Continue reading “Jack’s Old South BBQ, Braselton GA”

Photo Post 7: The Leopard Drive Inn, Homer GA

Earlier this month, I took my daughter up to the Commerce / Banks Crossing outlet malls to shop, and from there, we motored up the road to the town of Homer to pick up some sodas from a store that I had read about. Along the way, we passed by this very old fast food joint and I stopped on the way back to take a few pictures of it. I’d have bought a milkshake, but astonishingly, despite this place virtually screaming “soft serve,” they don’t actually have ice cream here. Continue reading “Photo Post 7: The Leopard Drive Inn, Homer GA”

Big Oak Bar-B-Q, Commerce GA

Here’s a curious turn of events. Earlier this month, I intended to stop by some barbecue place, forgot what it was, and settled for something else instead. In the end, it really didn’t matter – if it’s a place that we’ve never been, then I want to visit, simple as that – but there’s the downside of being scatterbrained and having too many facts to store in your skull. The place that I had originally wanted to stop was Cabin Creek in Nicholson, but that’ll have to wait until the next time. This visit saw us stopping by Big Oak, just outside of Commerce. Continue reading “Big Oak Bar-B-Q, Commerce GA”

Ming’s B.B.Q., Duluth GA

Since we live in the northwestern suburbs, we don’t often get to Gwinnett or Rockdale County for meals. These are the small suburbs that we typically rush through in the early hours on our way to Athens or other places. Over the decades, we’ve been missing out on an interesting cultural transformation.
