This is Marie, contributing an article about Leon’s Full Service in Decatur. The girlchild had other plans for the afternoon, so we went off with just the baby for a lunch together. These days that almost counts as a date meal! It helped that we had to park quite a ways away from the restaurant due to the rather appalling parking shortage in Decatur’s shopping district, so we got to pass by and dip into the cute little bookstore, Little Shop of Stories, along the way. Twisted Kitchen, Marietta GA
My daughter asked to try a new pasta place that opened near us in the little strip mall behind Cheeseburger Bobby’s. It’s called Twisted Kitchen and it opened in the space that, shamefully, used to belong to a butcher shop that we kept intending to visit but, he said, clearing his throat before speaking quietly, we never did. Figo Pasta, Alpharetta GA (CLOSED)
Last month, Marie and I were invited to come join the staff of the Alpharetta Figo, along with ninety-nine hundred other hungry people, for their grand reopening celebration. We’ve written about Figo previously, and so we knew that we could expect some very good eating. What surprised us, pleasantly, was how incredibly well the staff at this location handled one of the biggest, wildest mobs on one of the warmest evenings of the summer looking for a free dinner. The place was jammed with hot, sweaty, hungry people and, doors wide open, precious air conditioning escaped into the sticky Alpharetta sky, and that staff rose to the challenge like champions. Dogfather’s, Marietta GA
I enjoyed talking with Steve McCollum over at a new hot dog place near our house a couple of weeks ago. It’s called Dogfather’s, and it is not related to similarly-named joints in Illinois and Massachusetts. I’m sure you won’t recall (joke) the heat wave at the end of June, and how nobody could stand to be outside for more than a couple of minutes. Marie and the kids and I had gone to lunch at Bub-Ba-Q that Saturday, and drove past some poor boy on the corner of Chastain Meadows and Barrett Parkway waving a sign for this new hot dog place. The sign worked; we were so startled to see anybody jumping up and down and waving at cars in this heat that we actually paid attention to what he was advertising. Mexican Chains on Buford Highway
A few chapters ago, I mentioned my desire to visit more restaurants along the Buford Highway corridor, and sample more traditional and authentic tastes. I figured that Marie and I would enjoy some Asian restaurants together, but I would give some Mexican places a try by myself, as I enjoy traditional tacos and sauces more than she does. So, a couple of Fridays back, I made my way to visit two well-known stores. They’re both outposts of small Atlanta-based chains. Canton House, Chamblee GA
Marie and I would love to learn more about all the interesting and curious – I’m not sold enough to say wonderful or even “good” – food choices available along Buford Highway, and so we’re going to make a more concerted effort to get out of the ‘burbs and over here for more authentic Mexican, Chinese or Korean meals more frequently. As it happens, Marie seems to appreciate most Asian-style cooking a little more than I do, so perhaps we’ll try to give these restaurants a shot when we can go together, and maybe I’ll focus on the taquerias and Latin American cuisine when I get out on my own. Curly’s Fried Chicken, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)
So, let’s get the obligatory mention of LeRoy’s out of the way. I liked LeRoy’s. It was pretty good, but pretty expensive, and it didn’t last long, and it closed and a family rented out the property and put their own recipes in the fry vats.
