Scott’s Walk-Up Bar-B-Q, Cartersville GA
A reader had recommended that we give Scott’s Walk-Up Bar-B-Q in Bartow County a try. We didn’t have any specific plans for the second Saturday in October, and as our dance card started to fill with some major plans through the end of the year, I thought it a good idea for the four of us to just hop up the road for a quite short little trip. Scott’s is maybe half an hour from our place in Cobb, and while our hobbyist friends have mostly shied away from Cartersville – Dustin of the Georgia Barbecue Hunt is the only one that I can find who has paid Scott’s a visit – this place has received some solid writeups from newspapers and magazines, and has a devoted following. Smokin’ Po-Boys BBQ, Winder GA
About a year ago, I described a little drive that I took with my daughter and baby boy up through Hoschton and Winder to Athens and back, passing two barbecue joints along the way with which I was unfamiliar. I intended then to come back to Winder, and it is actually becoming depressing to realize just how long it is taking us to get back to some of these places. There’s never enough time or money, but I really would like to provide a little better documentation of the world of barbecue restaurants in this region, and we’re not getting any younger. Probably not the wisest course of action to think about such things after spending about five hours wandering about campus, visiting the ol’ comic book store and listening to early ’80s British chart music, honestly. Crowe’s Bar-B-Que, Madison GA
For the third time this year, Marie left town without me. This time out, it was most convenient for her work schedule to go down to Saint Simons Island to see her family at the same time as a big event at my work. On the Friday morning, however, I had several hours of free time after a short shift, and, while she and the children drove to south Georgia, I went east out I-20 to one of my favorite small towns, Madison. Daddy D’z, Atlanta GA
I’m pretty certain that, after Daddy D’z, there aren’t any more of what we might call the “iconic” Atlanta-area barbecue places waiting for us. It has been on my to-do list for many, many years and, one Thursday last month, I finally made my way over to Memorial Drive, near the state capitol building, to give it a try. It has been what you might call a “seasonal favorite” for quite some time. Spiced Right Rib House, Roswell GA
Here’s yet another long overdue chapter about a good place in the Atlanta area. Spiced Right is a restaurant that I’ve enjoyed a good deal more since their ownership changed in the early 2000s. In many previous chapters, I’ve mentioned how I used to have an old, ugly, Geocities page about Georgia barbecue restaurants. A reader had encouraged me to visit Spiced Right at what was at the time their only location, in Lilburn. So I trucked on down from Athens and did not enjoy the meal very much. It was my first experience with a barbecue buffet, and, while I can no longer remember details, I did not enjoy the taste of any of the meat. I was, on the other hand, really taken with their gigantic collection of sauces – a collection perhaps rivaled today by Buckhead Barbecue Company in Smyrna – but decided against making a return visit. Bone Lick BBQ, Atlanta GA
Among the disadvantages faced by being a suburbanite with kids and a day job is that certain events are often a real pain in the rear to manage. Monday evening sports events downtown, Monday evening concerts downtown, even Monday evening barbecue suppers downtown are just very difficult to schedule when you’re always on a clock of some kind and live so far away. Maybe it wouldn’t have been such a burden to make it down to P’cheen in the Old Fourth Ward if I didn’t work just about seven minutes away anyhow, but there’s only so many times in one day that I want to deal with I-75, you know?
