Since I work downtown, the main objection to heading that way when there’s a big sporting event in the city – the price of parking – is not an issue. So while all the surface lots and some of the decks started raising their rates upward of $40 to rip off the fans of Auburn and Mizzou who had come to town to see the SEC Championship Game, Marie and the baby and I enjoyed the crowds and seeing everybody having a great time at no additional cost. But we also got a reminder that there’s no substitute for common sense when there’s a big event in any downtown district. When we returned to our employee lot, Marie and I caught a scam artist “selling” spaces in our lot for $20 a head before beating it. We made sure that none of his victims got towed, but it’s worth a minute to remind everybody reading this to only park in a legitimate space, and give your money to somebody who has a right to take it. Timone’s Local Pizza Joint, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)
Last month, Marie and I enjoyed that rarest of treats: a date night. The kids were being watched and we had time to stretch our legs and enjoy each other’s company without worrying about our respective Baby Alarms going off. The weather outside was pretty awful, blustery and cold with just enough rain to make driving a small aggravation, but by the time we made it to Timone’s Local Pizza Joint in the Morningside neighborhood, it dried up a bit. Pizza Pura, Asheville NC (CLOSED)
In the previous chapter, I mentioned that, by chance, we visited both of the two restaurants in Asheville owned by Laura Reuss and her husband Ben Mixson for supper before we left. I picked White Duck and asked Marie to pick another, and we never looked at the other’s choice beyond the names and were pleasantly surprised to find the two restaurants were sisters. Peace, Love and Pizza, Woodstock GA
Hmmm. A tricky subject, this one. A while back, I wrote about this place’s original location in Kennesaw and praised the really excellent pizza. I also, playfully I thought, teased the business on their design, made up principally from dorm room Hendrix posters, and got a barrel of buckshot from the business’s owner for my cheek. You wouldn’t think that a deeply silly chapter that evoked the omnipresent “Hey man! Is that Freedom Rock?!” TV ads of the late eighties would aggravate anybody, but some people are touchy. Hearth Pizza Tavern, Sandy Springs GA
We hadn’t found time in ages to get together with our friend Leslie, who writes The Food & Me, and when I tossed a few ideas her way, she picked pizza. We met at Hearth Pizza Tavern after work one Friday last month. This is a little place at Roswell Road and Hammond, tucked away, invisibly, in the same strip mall as a Whole Foods and the popular Canton Cooks. Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint # 18, Marietta GA
Marie and I were invited to stop by the latest location of Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint, a chain based in Atlanta that is rapidly growing through the southeast. The East Cobb Uncle Maddio’s location is the second unit for franchisees John Dayton and David Tracht, who also own and operate another store in Woodstock, which was the first franchised location in the company. Shakey’s Pizza, Warner Robins GA (CLOSED)
Shakey’s Pizza was not part of my childhood, but it was a part of a whole mess of other people’s. Every so often, it sparks a happy memory or ten among some of the regulars at forums where I visit. If you’re in California, you’re never too far from a Shakey’s, as there are still about fifty stores in that state, but only ten others in the country. In the southeast, there is one in Auburn, and one in Warner Robins. Every week, a delivery truck comes east, bringing food for both of these stores. Perhaps they still have local-market TV ads for Shakey’s in California. Here’s one from the early 1970s, starring Kathy Coleman, who’d later play Holly in Sid and Marty Krofft’s Land of the Lost.
