A few Fridays ago, the kids and I fought the rush hour to meet Marie for dinner and spare her the rush hour commute home. We invited Emily from Spatialdrift to join us; Adam had the good fortune to fly out to the San Diego Comic-Con that weekend. This prompted the umpteen millionth discussion between my daughter and me about the difference between “lucky” and “fortunate.” I really, really hope that she gets this point one day. This wearying discussion concluded, I was happier to then show off the nearby fire station to the toddler, for him to smile and laugh about the fire trucks. Little Thai is in a curving strip mall on Sandy Springs Circle just before it meets Johnson Ferry. Hottie Hawg’s Smokin’ BBQ, Atlanta GA (take two) (CLOSED)
If you follow anybody in this hobby of writing about food and restaurants, you might have sussed that Hottie Hawg’s has been on a publicity blitz lately. The restaurant appeared last month on Lifetime TV’s Catering Wars miniseries and as the owner, Kyle Vaughn, was thinking about where they stood among other barbecue restaurants in our city, he noted, correctly, that most of the region’s bloggers have never really written about them. So his team went to work, sending out invitations to several of us. If you have not read about Hottie Hawg’s in the last two months, it’s not for lack of trying. Habanero’s Taqueria, Woodstock GA
Last month, I mentioned that I’d found some places in north Cobb that sounded interesting, and that Marie and our girlchild were taking turns selecting restaurants from the list. It was my daughter’s turn and she wanted to visit the Mexican place on the list, so we drove up a few exits to Woodstock and a new place called Habanero’s Taqueria. Martin’s, Austell GA
Ages back, sometime in this blog’s infancy, I intended to follow a metaphor to its conclusion and tell you good readers a little about Martin’s. As metaphors go, this is not the most accurate, but you know how Birmingham is home to a fast food chain called Milo’s and it is surrounded in the suburbs by another chain called Jack’s? Well, Zesto in Atlanta is similarly surrounded in this city’s suburbs by Martin’s. Kind of. I mean, there are something like 140 Jack’s all over north Alabama and peeking into neighboring states, and there are only fifteen Martin’s, almost all of which are in the northwestern suburbs and nowhere near an interstate exit, but it’s a little bit similar. Au Rendez-Vous, Chamblee GA
This is Marie, with an article about a French restaurant where we enjoyed a spontaneous meal a few weeks ago. The four of us went out on Saturday evening intending to hang out with some buddies, but as they were unavoidably detained and the place selected would have been the second pizza joint in two days, we looked around at the places close to where we were when plans changed. Thank goodness for Urbanspoon’s mobile ap. We allowed the baby to keep one of the six golf balls he had found in the grass at a park in Chamblee (nothing delights a toddler as much as a ball of any kind), and went to Au Rendez-vous Cafe Bistro instead. Westside Pizzeria, Atlanta GA
One thing’s certain about us food blog hobbyists: we’re an insular crowd. Oh, we don’t intend to be, but I think that, hobby-wide, there’s a sense of checking out what everybody else is doing and where everybody else is eating, and when somebody comes up from under the radar, it’s a big surprise.
