Last month, Marie and I were invited to a soft opening event for Perimeter Mall’s newest restaurant. Well, it was newest for a short time; we understand that a new Varasano’s Pizzeria is coming to the mall in a couple of weeks. Anyway, The Pub is a small chain based in Cincinnati (this is their twelfth store, and first Georgia location) that has the design of a traditional English pub, with appropriate posters and prints on the walls to give you the full British immersion experience. Henry VIII and the London Underground. The Beatles and The Who. Muse and Radiohead. Bangers and mash. Servers in kilts. It’s Six Flags Over London, guv’nah. Wiley’s Championship BBQ, Savannah GA
We had a really fun treat on our way home from Saint Simons Island. We stopped in for a couple of hours at the Savannah Children’s Museum, one of five properties around the city that are “powered” by the Coastal Heritage Society. It and its site neighbor, the Georgia State Railroad Museum, are set up in the remains of an old repair facility for the Central of Georgia Railway, most of which was built in the 1840s. At present, the children’s museum is almost entirely outdoors – so dress accordingly and bring sunscreen and water! – but they are hard at work fundraising for a mammoth facility within the to-be-renovated walls of one of the huge ruins. They utilize the open space extremely well, with a simple maze, slides, painting area, costume alcove, and a beautiful garden. This is absolutely one of our all-time favorite children’s museums and we enjoyed playing here a lot. Travelers, bring your kids and make a morning of it here! Frequently, I am asked – well, okay, never – “How does this whole ‘menu envy’ thing work?” Our visit to Iguanas, the fried seafood palace on Saint Simons Island’s main drag through the village, provided an absolutely perfect example of it. Gerald’s Pig and Shrimp, Tybee Island GA
On our most recent trip to south Georgia, I wanted to make two stops in Savannah, and possibly see a little more of the city. We decided to have a lunch there both on the way down and on the way back, and so we timed an early departure from Atlanta in order to get to Gerald’s Pig and Shrimp on Tybee Island just as they opened. We made it on time and their kitchen wasn’t quite ready. We had about a half an hour’s delay. Fortunately, there’s a cheap tourist goods shop across the street, and plenty of space for the three year-old to get his wiggles out while we waited. Chuy’s, Kennesaw GA
Chuy’s, a successful Tex-Mex chain based in Austin, has opened its latest (56th) store just down the road from us in Kennesaw, and invited me to stop by for a tour and some appetizers. This restaurant, the second in this market following the store in Dunwoody, is located along the stretch of Barrett Parkway populated by quite a few chains that get huge weekend business; in fact, it’s just two doors down from an On the Border, which struck me as curious, but Chuy’s marketing manager, Hilary Delling, assured me that the two restaurants are very different in taste, and diners will have very different experiences. Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q, Atlanta GA (take two)
Last month, the local chef Asha Gomez closed her celebrated restaurant Cardamom Hill, in part because the space was too small to seat all of the people who wished to eat there. I have never once heard of a barbecue place having that problem. In many famous places, the line and the parking issues are part and parcel of visiting, which is how President Obama was able to get all sorts of column inches in the papers by cutting in line at Franklin Barbecue in Austin TX – and by buying lunch for everybody whom he delayed, which was good of him – but that doesn’t mean that Marie and I ever want to deal with it with our impatient three year-old in tow.
